Agenda

  1. Welcome and Introductions. Rosalyn initiated a meeting with attendees, including Josh, John, Neil, Julian, and Joe. The attendees introduced their roles and interests. Josh discussed his work with Islandora and Docker, John discussed his digital preservation system, Neil, Rosalyn, and Julian mentioned their roles as OCFL editors, and Joe talked about his upcoming site migration project at Lehigh University.

  2. Backup and Restore Demo (Josh d'Entremont at Acadia University). Josh discussed Acadia University's transition from Fedora 5 to 6, detailing their backup system, the use of Docker, and the process for transferring content between servers. He highlighted current efforts to eliminate the need for specific utilities for migration with assistance from the Fedora community. He also introduced a new method for exporting and importing data, focusing on creating and managing tar files for the OCFL Root Directory. Lastly, he addressed issues related to file corruption during the rebuilding process and proposed solutions to prevent future problems.

    • Q&A: Neil, Josh, Joe, and Rosalyn discussed potential issues and solutions for larger-scale data backup and storage systems. Josh and Joe expressed concerns about the slow and inefficient backup process and the complexity of copying data into Docker containers. Neil suggested the possibility of using rsync to transfer the OCFL Root Directory. The participants were interested in using Amazon's storage and other community-provided solutions. Rosalyn mentioned her team's use of Amazon for storage and their upcoming migration from Fedora 3 to Fedora 6, which sparked further discussion and curiosity about how other teams manage their data. Josh shared a link to the makefile he uses in the chat for those interested.
  3. OCFL Workshop at iPres in Ghent. Neil announced a workshop/tutorial session at IPRES towards the end of the year, focusing on the the current version of OCFL, its implementation notes, and the features for version 2. Rosalyn and Neil emphasized that the discussion would be open and lively. John expressed interest in the potential additional features but noted they were still getting used to OCFL. Neil reassured that the new features would be additions rather than changes, aiming to maintain the current Ocfl functionality.
