Description

EPSRC provide a platform called Grants on the Web (GoW), which provides access to all current grants, categorised by research area. EPSRC offers the following explanation in regards to the relationship between different research areas based on the grants funded within those areas:

"Grants are classified using one or more research areas. The number of grants listed below does not reflect the proportion assigned to different research areas and thus all grants of some relevance to the research area are counted. However, the value of the investment does reflect the proportion assigned to different research areas."

Therefore, by comparing the grants from each research areas and keeping note of the common grants between areas, a relationship between different research areas is established. The challenge is the fact that GoW is a web-based only service, providing no form of download of the data. This meant that a web scraper had to be developed in order to extract the information and prepare it in a format which is more suitable for analysis.
