Deploy the IVCT

Introduction

As mentioned in the IVCT_Operation Readme this repository provides environment (.env) and compose files (*.yml) to get and launch the IVCT Software in a virtual container System.

We describe here an example how to do this with the container software docker and docker-compose.

Prerequisite

A Docker Engine and Docker Compose have been installed.

You may need a version of java installed on your System and set a proper path to it.

The IVCT and example SUT (System under Test) are prepared to work with a HLA federate application. There are different implementations (Pitch, VTMaK, Portico) for this central component, called "Run-Time-Infrastructure" (RTI)
In this Example we use the HLA-RTI implementation Pitch. This has to be installed in your environment even if you want to work with a remote "Central RTI Component" to provide the IVCT a "local RTI Component"
You may get a trial Version at https://pitchtechnologies.com/

See Docker Engine for instructions on installing a Docker Engine.

#ToDo: Link to RTI Information to be added here

Clone this repository to your local environment

The first step is to clone this repository to your Docker Host to get the example compositions.

In the repository there are IVCT and SUT example compositions which work with different HLA-RTI implementations (Pitch, VTMaK, and Portico), organized in the following directories:

deployment/ivct
deployment/sut-hellowworld

Each ivct and sut-helloworld directory contains a .env file to tailor the composition in that directory to the local infrastructure. And one or more docker-compose*.yml Files.

Adapt the IVCT environment settings

In the following steps we will prepare the IVCT Start for the Pitch RTI.

Navigate to the directory deployment/ivct. Open the .env file in a text editor and verify the settings. Different values need to be adapted to the system which is used:

The host where your docker Installation (with the later started IVCT Components) is at:
DOCKERHOST=192.168.1.1

The address where the Pitch "Central RTI Component" is running you want to work with.
PITCH_CRCADDRESS=192.168.1.1:8989
(if you want to connect with a remote pitch CRC this address differs from "DOCKERHOST".)

Set the following to the installation directory of the local Pitch RTI on the host
PITCH_RTI_HOME='C:\Program Files\prti1516e
PITCH_RTI_SETTINGS='C:\Users***\prti1516e

The port of the IVCT web-based UI should be changed if another service already uses this port.
IVCT_UIPORT=8080

Other settings should be fine, explanations for the settings are given in the .env-files.
#ToDo: create one ore more new documents, which explains variables ivct/.env, sut-helloworld/.env

You may change settings directly in the .env file, however you should be aware that this creates a modification in your cloned repository. You can do this, but it may cause problems to stay in sync with future updates.
Another option to adjust your settings, may be to define the variables to be modified in your system environment. The environment variables will overwrite anything inside the .env file.

Start the IVCT

From the ivct directory (e.g.deployment/ivct) start the IVCT using the following command:

docker-compose -f docker-compose.yml up

The IVCT Docker container images will be pulled from the Docker Hub and the IVCT will be deployed.

At this point the IVCT is running in a docker container.

Further steps

Login to the IVCT UI to test the installation

The IVCT provides a webinterface based on tomcat. This IVCT GUI can be reached with a webbrowser at: http://${DOCKERHOST}:${IVCT_UIPORT}.
You have to replace DOCKERHOST and IVCT_UIPORT by the values set in the .env file.

http://192.168.1.1:8080

The final step is to log into the IVCT UI.
Login as user admin with password admin.

Once you are logged in you can explore the UI, as described in more detail at: IVCT-GettingStarted-Graphical-User-Interface.adoc
#toDo: IVCT-GettingStarted-Graphical-User-Interface.adoc has to be reviewed

Start a federate to demonstrate the usage of IVCT with a example test-suite

However, for executing a test a System Under Test (SUT) is required.

A sample "System Under Test" can be build and started with the components of this repository similar to the procedure written obove.
