Lokalise Translations

Thank you for helping us add translations to Zooniverse.org! Below are instructions on how to use our translation service.

Email Invite

  • You will receive an invitation by email from a service called Lokalise. You may receive more than one email, but only need to click on one to access Zooniverse translations.
  • Login to Lokalise using the email address where you received the invitation link.

Lokalise Dashboard

  • Clicking the Lokalise icon in the upper left corner will show your dashboard (https://app.lokalise.com).
  • In your dashboard you’ll see three FEM projects (FEM: lib-classifier, FEM: app-project, FEM: lib-react-components) and one PFE project (simply, PFE). These projects correspond to different parts of the website and our two frontend codebases. For the purpose of providing translations to our older PFE codebase, please select your language of interest from the PFE project, however translations to the FEM projects would also be of great help!

Submitting Translations

We’ll work through an example using French.

  1. Click on the name of a project to view a list of translation keys.

  2. Select Bilingual view.

    Bilingual View

Each key has an existing English translation and we need your help filling in the French translations. Here’s a screenshot of an example key with English on the left and French on the right:

  3. Click on the text in the French column to edit a translation. Most of them will say Empty and need new text. To filter by empty translations, select “Untranslated” from the Filter dropdown.

  4. Once you’ve edited a translation, submit it by clicking on the checkmark. See screenshot below:

  5. If a translation key contains a purple word in its English translation, the French translation should also contain the purple word. Lokalise will prompt you do include it, and here’s an example:

Additional Notes

  • There’s no need to address QA issues using the “Verified” or “History” buttons.
  • Feel free to contact us if you have questions about context for a certain translation key, and make sure to record the key’s name (Looks::Like::This) as well as the project name for reference.
  • If you’re unable to translate a key, it’s okay to leave it as Empty because empty keys will default to English on Zooniverse.org.

Next Steps

  • Please notify Zooniverse when you’ve completed the language translation.
  • The Zooniverse team will review your submitted translations and publish them to the live website within a couple of weeks.
  • We may reach out to you to review a preview of Zooniverse’s website in a certain language to doublecheck translations.
  • Thanks again!
