The chunk option 'child' currently enables child documents to be inserted into a master LaTeX document. It would be great to also be able to use this nested document feature when working with Markdown documents.

this is terrific yihui! it makes working with Rmd files all the more easier.

Could it be possible to include child documents in a markdown file using knit_child within a chunk?

Yes, you can do it, but it requires more work than using the child option. You will have to write the results from knit_child() back to the output of the parent document. I do not think it is worth it.
