UC GIS Week 2023 Mapathon

Each year, disasters around the world affect or displace 200 million people. Many of the places where these disasters occur are literally ‘missing’ from open and accessible maps and first responders lack the information to make valuable decisions regarding relief efforts.

Join the UC San Diego Library for a Mapathon as a part of UC GIS Week. This mapping event will support the Missing Maps project. Missing Maps asks for volunteers worldwide to map vulnerable areas before disaster or crisis strikes to reduce risk and speed recovery efforts. We’ll work together to trace buildings and roads from satellite images, for example; then, humanitarian groups on the ground will add the details and create maps with our data.

No experience or special skills are required. This is a Bring Your Own Device event. Bring your own laptops and chargers.

Join us for the whole event or drop in as your schedule allows. Snacks and treats will be provided. Tell us you're coming by registering today!

Location: Classroom 1, Geisel Library

Tutorials and Guides

What to expect once the Map-a-thon begins

We will be giving brief tutorials/workshops to get people up to speed and we will have volunteers on hand to get you started and answer questions.

The project we will be mapping is: #15182 Open Mapping Hub Asia-Pacific-- MULTAN, SOUTHERN PUNJAB, PAKISTAN- BUILDING MAPPING

The emerging OSM Pakistan Community targets to map Southern Punjab in the following months. Multan is a city oon the Chenab River home to 1.872 million people. It is identifed to have high risk of flooding and earthquake liquefaction. Mapping the buildings in these cities will be able to prepare geospatial data for disaster and climate change resiliency planning.
