It looks like there's a couple of places in this file that this could be done. I think we should do this separately since it isn't really related to async/await conversion!

This converts
synapse.cryptoto async/await. I was having issues with the tests here, so there's a bunch of commits (like a function each), but the overall changes are reasonable to look at.
