Why is there a need for tracking on eips.ethereum.org?

@axic Pure speculation on my part, but my guess would be to provide better SEO options for people who search things like "EIP 1894"

Hey @axic - I received a request to improve the discoverability of the EIPs website (ethereum/ethereum-org-website#343) & I'd like to measure if my changes (#2325) actually make a difference so we can iterate & improve.

There has been some previous discussion about tracking and it seemed it isn't much appreciated. I wouldn't be happy to see "accept cookies"-style pop ups on the site, but that's my personal opinion.

I personally would be ok merging the meta tag changes (as in #2325), but would defer to achieving some consensus on merging this PR.

Thanks @axic.

@nicksavers & @fulldecent - you two are in the PR @axic mentioned so I'd like to get your input on this. Do you folks have any concerns with adding Matomo for site analytics? It's an open-source alternative to Google Analytics. The devops team would know more but from my understanding, we host our own instance of it & do not share that aggregated user data with 3rd party sources. It's currently active on ethereum.org, blog.ethereum.org & eth.wiki.

While you're here, I'd appreciate any input you have on this original discussion, which is what brought me here: ethereum/ethereum-org-website#343. I'm curious to hear what you think about potentially migrating this EIP site content to ethereum.org, or other alternative ideas to improve access & UX. I'm currently working full time as a developer on ethereum.org & may have the bandwidth to contribute, so feel free to share your wishlist on what you'd like to see!

SEO is actually my day job.

I will discuss on ethereum/ethereum-org-website#343

I do not think adding this kind of tracking adds anything of value.

If you do want to add tracking then let's set up Google Search Console on the domain. You are welcome to set me up on that and I can explain the benefits. Call me.

Separately, there is a cost of accepting this, it is that we need to add popups.

Probably all the people that matter in our community are already using ad and analytics blocking. So we can expect minimal data coming in.

And FTLOG if we can avoid one more popup in my day I will be happy.

@Souptacular Can we discuss on email about setting me up for Google Search Console?

@fulldecent I like the idea of Google Search Console. I'd also like to add it to ethereum.org but I can't find much info on what specific data it tracks (is it only impression volume & rankings?) or how the data collected is shared with Google or third parties. Do you have any insight on this or links you could share?

Yes I will send you my screenshots soon.

In general this tool does not collect any additional information. It simply gives you access to the data Google already collects, I.e. from their crawler and them seeing all SERP clicks.

Here are screenshots for a commercial website showing the types of information you'll get.
