This doesn't solve the problem that caused a NULL to be passed to CRS() in the first place. Shouldn't a NULL break CRS()?

Maybe a warning if input argument is NULL?

Warning message:
In CRS(attr(x[[attr(x, "sf_column")]], "crs")[["proj4string"]]) :
  CRS: projargs should not be NULL; set to NA
