v0.5.0 - Major Overhaul to Progression [pre-release]

In this update, major changes have been made to the game's progression and balance. Most notably, upgrades for standard items have been removed. It is possible there is some stuff I missed so please let me know if upgrade-based abilities are no longer working or have not suitably been replaced.

For the most part though, the upgrade system has been replaced in it's entirety by durability, as have scrolls of upgrade and items crafted from them. The grind depth has been replaced by a buff that the player will receive on reaching a new depth, allowing them to get upgrade materials by killing enemies quickly. This can be extended by a certain newly-added scroll.

In addition to this, several bugs have been fixed:

  • Fixed an issue where changing chapter impacted existing runs
  • Fixed a crash with Transfusion

And some balance issues addressed:

  • Exp needed to level up down ~12.5%
  • Stamina regens ~50% faster
  • Hp gain dropoff is slightly slower when upgrading the same stat
  • When stamina is depleted, the player is more vulnerable to critical hits and unable to devliver critical hits
  • Shields can now parry multiple enemies on one turn

v0.4.17a - Stamina re-added, along with numerous balance changes and bugfixes

v0.4.17a:
Sorcerer's Shield fixed, grind depth now provides gold again correctly

In this version, a reworked version of Stamina has been re-implemented, as a partial nerf to shields mainly. Attacking now uses stamina, but the quantity used is not too much, however shields now drain stamina rather than charge when blocking, to prevent them being too overpowered.

A critical hit mechanic has also been implemented, where melee attacks have a chance to "crit" and deal increased damage (+50% for most weapons) to the enemy. This replaces accuracy and evasion as a mechanic, and all melee hits are guaranteed.

Numerous bugfixes and balance changes have been implemented too, including

Bugfixes:

  • Fixed various missed strings
  • Adrenaline Surge is now actually functional
  • "Ankhs used" statistic is no longer affected by resurrections on the grind depth
  • Aug stones can't be used on ranged weapons and shields
  • The cloak of shadows is no longer free in shops
  • Stat rings no longer give infinite HP by equipping and unequipping
  • Fixed a crash with flies

Balance changes:

  • Base mob damage and health slightly nerfed
  • Difficulty scaling reworked, each difficulty is now approximately as hard scaling-wise as the one below it was before
  • Broken Seal now only carries 1 upgrade
  • Exhausting curse reworked: now weapon uses more stamina, but makes enemy vulnerable

v0.4.16b - A few new items, major balance changes, bugfixes

This update includes 2 new ranged weapons, a new relic and a new shield. It also includes fixes for many bugs, as well as a near-overhaul of balance.

v0.4.16a - Fixed a couple issues with the grind depth and parrying
v0.4.16b - Fixes for crashes and the Titan's Shield

New items:

  • Old Sun Crossbow
  • Crescent Moon Greatbow
  • Karah Bracelet
  • Prophet's Shield

Balance changes:

  • Most depth-based effects now scale exponentially using the same formula as mobs. For example, Toxic gas now does an amazing 114 damage in the final depth of the Demon Halls
  • Corrosive Gas damage now builds exponentially, with each tick inside it increasing damage by 10%
  • Grim now applies deferred death rather than directly one-shotting, however it's proc chance is increased
  • Dwarf Monks can now parry the player in the same way as the player parries
  • Mob base damage slightly reduced (12-24 from 15-30)
  • Difference between difficulty settings reduced
  • Mobs have 20% reduced health
  • Classes now start with 3 of their stat rather than 2
  • "item of level acquired" now requires you to be able to use the item in question
  • Encumbrance reworked; now simply reduces damage
  • Cursed Wands no longer shoot random effects, instead they have unlimited charges but use mana
  • Shields now loose 100% of their charge if they fail to parry

Bugfixes:

  • Fixed a crash with Transfusion
  • Fixed the description of the "Vulnerable" debuff
  • Relics now have an unidentified description that isn't just missed_string
  • Fixed a strange debug print in the Tengu fight
  • Fixed Statues triggering "your wand doesn't have enough charges"
  • Fixed item sell window
  • Fixed Transfusion crashing the game
  • Fixed hero NPCs freezing the game

Other changes:

  • Descriptions of shields and several rings have been changed to include lore
  • Powers removed from the game (you'll still have them for now if you bought them, just won't be able to obtain them)

It has been a while since the last update, sorry for the wait

I have reworked Dragon Pendants and Artifacts into Relics - expanding the options for me adding new ones. Few Dragon Pendants were added except early on, this is because there is only so much you can do with them.

Many other changes have been made:

  • Mobs no longer scale off hero level
  • Hero level cap is back down to 30 again (was 60)
  • Ring of Tenacity + stat rings reworked
  • Ring of Faith and Power added

v0.4.14a - fixed some bugs:

  • Healing stopping after half used up in early levels
  • Crash when talking to some NPCs, and when loading into an old save with an NPC on the depth

In this release, there have been some bugfixes, improvement to hero npc dialog, and reworks to the healing system:

  • Passive regen is removed
  • HP potions return, but restore HP very slowly
  • Priestess NPC now has some dialog, Mage and Warrior have more fleshed-out dialog
  • Descending from Tengu no longer crashes the game
  • Stat rings no longer incorrectly say they increase your stat by x a few upgrades before they actually do
  • New weapon: Arachia (a curved greatsword)

v0.4.13b - Many new weapons, boss refights

v0.4.13b fixes:

  • Fixed bugs occasionally still preventing progress past Goo
  • Fixed Tengu's arena being a pain to exit

v0.4.13a fixes:

  • Being unable to progress past Goo
  • Losing flask charges from picking them up
  • Upgrades being lost for no apparent reason

Sadly, saves that are locked at Goo will remain stuck, however thankfully it's early in the game and restarting isn't too much of a big deal. You can always store your items with the Mage if you were really happy with your build, and retrieve them at +0 for your next run.

In this release, I have added many new weapons, and made some of the categories more historically accurate. Katanas have received the most change, with there now being 3 variants, most of which require 2 "hands" to use properly. Additionally, there are 2 new curved swords (Falchion and Midnight Cutlass) and the Greatsword is no longer the basic sword.

The biggest improvement of this version however is the ability to refight bosses! Tired of grinding away against the same 4 coloured statues to get Upgrade Scrolls? Why not face off against a boss! All of the bosses of the main game, including the one boss of chapter 2, can be rematched using the Lucky Badge for extra upgrade materials.

  • Parry Shield renamed Parrying Dagger
  • Titan's Shield
  • Sorcerer's Shield
  • Reflex Shield
  • Hero's Sword

Bugfixes:

  • Wands being cursed when upgraded with a small chance rather than being uncursed
  • Parrying lasting infinitely until hit
  • Storing unique items such as relic weapons and the Mage's Staff/Huntress' Bow/etc in storage

v0.4.11 - New wand, shield, curse intensity

One of the biggest changes of this release is probably "curse intensity". Now, items are not simply cursed or uncursed. They have a "curse intensity" or level of curse. Remove Curse Scroll will only reduce the intensity by 1, so be careful before equipping items. Curse intensity can be helpful however, as it increases the proc chance of curse enchantments and gives bonus upgrades at high levels.

New wand: Wand of Voltage. Shoots electrical bolts that "charge" enemies, all charged enemies will zap the target as well.

New shield: Pestilent Shield. Poisons the enemy.

Reworked wand: Wand of Darkness. Now spreads a cloud of gas that inflicts mobs with a debuff that lets them return as allies for a short time when killed.

Bugfixes:

  • Fixed missing storage description when on Mage
  • Fixed crash with wands being in attack indicator
  • Fixed buggy throwing animations

v0.4.10 - Storage between runs

Pre-release

Ever found an item you want to try out, but you already have a good build it doesn't fit with/it scales with a stat you have barely any of? This update should help fix that problem. By talking to the Mage NPC on the surface (if you are Mage you can do it anywhere through the hero window) you will be able to store any upgradable item between runs. All its upgrades will be removed however along with any curses or enchantments. Next run you can pick it up again and it'll be a perfect starting item!

Additional changes:

  • Reduced upgrade removal from Magical Infusion
  • Dragon Pendants can now be transmuted
  • Mystery Meat poison can no longer one-shot the player

v0.4.9 - Ranged weapons!

Pre-release

In this release, missile weapons have finally been replaced by ranged weapons, which will hopefully make Huntress more interesting. Currently only 9 are in the game, but thanks to a great pixel artist on my server, there are sprites for many, many more. Ring of Sharpshooting is also currently unavailable, will be reworked sometime.

Improvements:

  • Now cannot dodge while attempting to parry

Balance:

  • Bosses drop more flask charges on lower difficulties (including Normal)
  • Lower gap between difficulties
  • Many healing items other than PoH nerfed
  • Enemies can notice the player faster (if perception roll was more than double stealth roll, roll to gain 1 suspicion on top of existing)

And, because of this rework, the "melee" weapons Crossbow and Swift Crossbow are removed, although Crossbow returns as a ranged weapon. To replace them, three new melee weapons are in the game: the Pitchfork, the Royal Halberd and the Plain Sword.
