Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Found this while working on [release/v1.4] Security bumps #3308.
  2. When generating automatically or manually a cluster.yml, it's possible to duplicate keys and provide different values.
  3. The last key and its value will be the definitive and no error will be generated.
  4. This can impact users and make it difficult to troubleshoot large cluster.yml files.

Results:

  1. By using the above cluster.yml file and executing ./rke up --config cluster.yml:
# ./kubectl --kubeconfig kube_config_cluster.yml get nodes
NAME STATUS ROLES AGE VERSION
146.190.137.126 Ready controlplane,etcd,worker 2m30s v1.25.11
  1. The cluster will be deployed successfully and use the value specified in the second key:
kubernetes_version: v1.24.15-rancher1-1
kubernetes_version: v1.25.11-rancher1-1 # <--- key is duplicated, but with different value
