Hey all, welcome to the latest Codespaces check-in! First up, we have some housekeeping updates on changes that have gone on behind the scenes.
Housekeeping updates 🧹
Addressing recent availability issues
GitHub has recently experienced several availability incidents, both long running and shorter duration. These incidents have now been resolved, but if you’d like a look inside what happened and how we’ll be mitigating them in future, take a look at this blog post from GitHub Chief Security Officer Mike Hanley.
Temporary authorization holds on metered products
If you’re using products that use metered billing (that’s billing per quantity, such as storage or compute hours, for products like Actions, Packages, or Codespaces) then you may see temporary authorization holds placed on the billing cards for these accounts. These will appear as pending and will be immediately reversed once approved by your bank. You will not be charged for these holds.
Codespaces Virtual Machine Host Operating System Upgrade
The underlying host operating system that runs GitHub Codespaces has been upgraded from Ubuntu 18.04 to Ubuntu 22.04. This upgrade should be invisible to most users, but if your devcontainer depends on a specific version of the host operating system or Linux kernel then you will need to make changes to your configuration. See the blog post for mor information.
From the Community 💬
Thanks to @matthewsmithwarren for coming back to share status updates in this thread with the community during a recent Codespaces incident.
Thanks to @UsatiyNyan and @markusgerber76 for giving options on changing the display language inside a Codespace.
That's all for this time! See you on the next check-in for more ✨
