SPC depth expansion / aggregation when n is HUGE (slice / slab)

It is clear that expansion to 1cm slices isn't always possible when the number of profiles is huge (>100k?). It would be nice to have backup plans when 1cm expansion isn't necessary (too expensive). The working model: "the full distance matrix is nice to have, sometimes essential; but impossible to generate sometimes".
