try using Yarn maybe. I don't know why it would be different, but i use Yarn locally, CI and in Prod without issue

even running npm run build on my machine works, try pulling the latest master and make sure you update the npm packages. thinking now, there was a bug in Preact-Cli that caused this issue in the past

are you sure it's up to date and you're not trying to build your fork of the repo?

My fork builds fine (although it's quite out of date).

This is from master.
