#773 is not really resolved by this - the usefulness of showing natural=desert as a colored area is still questionable.

Heath will be awfully close to grass/grassland - use of patterns for distinction at high zoom levels for those would probably be a good idea.

Generally using the same brightness for all vegetation types would not be good. It makes sense to make this depend on the density of the vegetation shown - wood/forest are dark because they are dense, others less so.

+1, for Urban / settlement landuse there might be a point in having them similar (it might also be argued that industrial should be different) but there is no need to have forests with the same brightness as residential areas or open areas like grassland, rather it seems counterproductive =

There's not enough distinct colours to cover the range of vegetation and other natural tags we have to deal with without varying the lightness anyways.
