highway=service service=driveway is not rendered in zoom levels 13-15. All other highway=* are rendered until level 13 (even highway=path). This results in disconnected streets.
Example: http://www.openstreetmap.org/?mlat=50.6925&mlon=12.8393#map=16/50.6925/12.8393 (this is zoom16, zoom out once)

Thank you for reporting, I agree this is a problem.

I think this is fine. You do not want to display everything at all zoom levels.

For that case I am confused why it is even a driveway and not a normal service road

Linked problematic street is a tagging problem.

highway=service service=driveway is less important than highway=path so not rendering it on this level is not a big problem.

What about render service=driveway at zoom 13-15 thin grey like residentials at zoom 12?

Maybe we should not render paths at level 13!

And again I would argue they should not be a driveway they should be standard service roads.

Okay, how about here:
http://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=16/48.5827/-123.6271
The driveway on the south side of Sooke Lake Road is correctly a driveway, and the connected track becomes floating when you zoom out. You also get the driveway on the north side disappearing such that other tracks now seemingly end at certain points when in fact they're connected to something else.

I agree with Klumbumbus that if any highway is displayed at any given zoom level, then all highways should be displayed at that zoom level. Otherwise you run into scenarios like the above where highway connections aren't correctly shown.

Again why is that a driveway and not a normal service road? Maybe it just me but do not see any of these as driveways.

The question about disappearing stuff is confusing maybe we render too much at lower zooms (paths, etc) but are we too include parking aisles too in this as the same apply to these too.

Maybe we could render them really thin but frankly I do not see the reason.

We are trying to reduce clutter on the map we need to consider if this is more clutter.

In my case, those highways are correctly tagged as driveways because that's what they are. The only structures up that highway are a pair of houses, which in my country and language would lead me to refer to it as a "driveway". Does OSM have a differing definition of driveway that I'm not aware of?

http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:service=driveway

"A driveway is a service road leading to a residence or business, usually with access=private. Use with highway=service." (note singular form in "residence or business").

As this leads to more than one house, maybe it is not a driveway? (I am unable to check whatever it is case of single family with two houses).

See also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Driveway "A driveway (also called drive in UK English) is a type of private road for local access to one or a small group of structures, and is owned and maintained by an individual or group."

And countexample: area with mapped private roads leading to houses. Rendering it in any way on 13 to 15 would hopelessly clutter the map. Note that other houses also have roads like this but it is not mapped (yet): http://www.openstreetmap.org/?mlat=50.0445&mlon=19.8507#map=16/50.0445/19.8507

And https://trac.openstreetmap.org/ticket/3788 is a good solution to fix part of "tracks that are appearing to be not connected to anything".

It's not clear to me how we can improve this situation, so I will close this issue.

Would it be an option simply start rendering footpathes later (=at higher zoom levels only)?

No, not really. In the countryside footpaths at z15 are really necessary.
