Your use case

What would you like to do?

Currently, if you hide events such as joins/leaves, avatar/display name changes, etc, they still show up as unread markers, and they should not.

Why would you like to do it?

I know someone who changes their avatar and display name very frequently and constantly marks old unused chats as unread.

How would you like to achieve it?

Don't show an unread marker for messages hidden in preferences.

Have you considered any alternatives?

You could simply not show unread markers for room member updates at all, but it seems less favorable.

Update: I think I was mistaken on this occurring on mobile because I was so used to it on desktop. I'll go ahead and close it, but if anyone else does has it happen I'll just reopen it.
