Make unit tests more robust.

The unit tests have been failing randomly on Linux and macOS platforms for errors like Task was canceled, Connection refused, The response ended prematurely. etc.
These types of errors indicate the tests aren't as robust as we expect them to be. We should make these tests more robust.
