Drug names are not standardized in MMEDs.

Describe the solution you'd like
Would be helpful for drug names to follow a standard classification system. The WHO ATC/DDD Index and USP could be good options. The ATC system looks more detailed and incorporates info about anatomy and chemistry (see example at end of text).

Describe alternatives you've considered
DEA system is used by the US DEA and classifies drugs based on potential for abuse. Britain and Australia also have their own classification systems.

Additional context
See example ATC/DDD Index for aspirin (N02BA01):

  1. Anatomical main group: N - Nervous system
  2. Therapeutic subgroup: N02 - Analgesics
  3. Pharmacological subgroup: N02B - Other analgesics and antipyretics
  4. Chemical subgroup: N02BA - Salicylic acid and derivatives
  5. Chemical substance: N02BA01 - Acetylsalicylic acid
