Overview

Ten Simple Rules is a collection on PLOS that is designed to: "provide a quick, concentrated guide for mastering some of the professional challenges research scientists face in their careers."

One challenge is adopting open science practices in biomedical research! The ten simple rules venue is a good place to discuss these challenges and to provide effective solutions.

Scope

The article will focus on guidelines for effectively conducting "open science" in biomedical research projects. This list will encompass everything from technical solutions to tips for communicating with reluctant collaborators.

FOSTER defines open science as:

the practice of science in such a way that others can collaborate and contribute, where research data, lab notes and other research processes are freely available, under terms that enable reuse, redistribution and reproduction of the research and its underlying data and methods.

This definition will guide how we think about crafting our rules.

Purpose

Our goal is to make open science accessible to more people and to highlight the feasibility of an open science approach to the wider biomedical research community.

Procedure

Rules, papers, examples, and other topics will be discussed using github issues. The manuscript will be written using Manubot. We intend to take advantage of the knowledge and experience already in the community, so anyone is free to contribute to this project! Authorship will be determined based on substantial contributions to writing both the manuscript and github issues.

In essence, similar to @Benjamin-Lee's approach to writing the deep-rules paper. I think this is the right way to go!
