rhdf5 is a Bioconductor package and it looks like install_github has a hard time finding it. A tweak that worked for me was to put the line biocViews: right above the line Imports: in the DESCRIPTION for BirdFlowR.

Thanks. All the references I could find to this solution link back to that same comment...
which says that says it's not documented anywhere. I'd hoped there would be a little better documentation, but sometimes that's how it is with R. I'll make the change.
