Two tricks that helped me customize my lay-out

Tip 1:

I use the three pane layout. The preview of directory contents kept opening up with truncate-lines in the wrong state (as in long filenames taking up two lines). Since the directory preview opens up in fundamental mode, this helped me:

Tip 2:

I wasn't able to get Dirvish to show the datetime of the files. Turned out that there was not enough space in the middle pane to show it, which I solved by changing the size of the pane in the default lay-out:
