<p>Le voyage de Diderot en Russie ne devait pas être seulement un témoignage de reconnaissance envers l’impératrice, le philosophe en revint chargé de travaux. Il devait d’abord publier le compte rendu de ce qui avait été déjà fait par ordre de Catherine II au point de vue de Renseignement, et il s’acquitta de cette tâche avant de rentrer à Paris en surveillant en Hollande l’édition des <hi rend="i">Plans et Statuts</hi><note xml:id="PAG_00000415-note1"> Voyez la note, t. II, p. 431, et les <hi rend="i">extraits</hi> ci-après, pages 415 et 544.</note> du maréchal Betzki. Il devait ensuite envoyer un projet d’Université dont la rédaction l’occupa pendant plusieurs années.</p>
<p>Ce <hi rend="i">Plan d’une Université</hi> n’a jamais été connu en France dans toute son étendue, et nous ne croyons pas qu’il ait été appliqué en Russie. Naigeon en a donné un résumé, mais n’en a cité que d’insignifiants fragments (4 ou 5 pages). En 1813, le manuscrit original fut communiqué par Suard à M. Guizot, alors rédacteur des <hi rend="i">Annales de l’Éducation</hi>. Celui-ci en donna un extrait dans ce journal, numéros VIII-XI, 15 novembre, 15 décembre 1813 et 15 janvier 1814. Ce manuscrit, de cent soixante-dix pages, était entièrement écrit de la main de Diderot, avec des ratures, des corrections, et même quelques négligences de style qui pouvaient donner lieu de le regarder comme un premier brouillon. A la mort de Suard, il fut remis à sa veuve. On présume, dit M. Brière, en tête de sa réimpression de la partie publiée par M. Guizot, qu’il a été détruit. Heureusement, la copie définitive avait été envoyée à sa destination et c’est sur cette copie que M. Léon Godard a pu rétablir l’ensemble que nous donnons aujourd’hui pour la première fois.</p>
<p>Nous n’insisterons pas sur l’importance de ce travail ; nous engagerons seulement le lecteur à le méditer, sans nous flatter, d’ailleurs, de l’espoir que le plan de Diderot soit jamais mis à exécution.</p>

<p>Il ne serait cependant pas, il faut bien le dire, trop en dehors du mouvement de la société moderne. Ce qui est remarquable, en outre, c’est qu’on y découvre déjà les reproches contre la méthode d’enseignement des langues anciennes et deux des aspirations que nous croyons propres à notre temps : l’éducation professionnelle et l’instruction gratuite et obligatoire.</p>
<p>Si l’auteur ne se prononce pas pour l’instruction laïque, c’est pour ne pas choquer les convenances que lui avait prescrites son illustre correspondante. Mais il ne se fait pas faute de lui dire incidemment quelles seraient ses préférences sur ce point. Quant à ce qui est de la gratuité, il va même plus loin que nous n’allons encore : il veut que les enfants soient nourris à l’école pour enlever leur dernier prétexte aux parents récalcitrants.</p>
<p>Nous ne savons pas exactement à quelle époque le <hi rend="i">Plan</hi> fut achevé. Les dernières années du philosophe furent très-laborieuses ; c’est alors qu’il écrivit ses trois grands ouvrages : la <hi rend="i">Réfutation de</hi> L’HOMME ; <hi rend="i">l’Essai sur les règnes de Claude et de Néron</hi>, le <hi rend="i">Plan d’une Université</hi>, et beaucoup d’autres d’un genre différent, comme <hi rend="i">Jacques le Fataliste</hi>, des <hi rend="i">Dialogues</hi>, etc. Le <hi rend="i">Plan</hi>, quoique certaines dates citées fassent supposer qu’il était terminé en 1776, étant un résumé des réflexions de toute la vie de Diderot sur l’éducation, nous a paru pouvoir sans inconvénient être placé chronologiquement ici.</p>
<p>M. Guizot, dans sa publication, s’est borné à la première partie, celle qui concerne la <hi rend="i">Faculté des arts</hi>. C’est, en effet, celle qui devait avoir alors et qui aura encore, sans doute, aujourd’hui, le plus d’intérêt pour le lecteur. Cependant il est impossible, quand on ne connaît que ce fragment, de se rendre compte de la portée de l’œuvre. Ce n’est qu’en la lisant en entier qu’on y reconnaît cette tête à laquelle on doit le <hi rend="i">Prospectus</hi> de <hi rend="i">l’Encyclopédie</hi>. C’est une grande vue d’ensemble où, sans appareil systématique, se déroulent simplement et logiquement des idées généralement justes et dont quelques-unes ne sont inapplicables que parce que la routine et les abus s’y opposent toujours, comme au temps de Diderot. Naigeon (<hi rend="i">Mémoires)</hi> avait raison quand il disait : « Remarquons que cet ouvrage de Diderot, un des plus graves et des plus importants par son objet dont il se soit jamais occupé, suffirait pour prouver combien ses idées et ses connaissances étaient bien liées, bien ordonnées dans sa tête. Strictement renfermé dans les limites de son sujet, il ne s’est permis aucun écart, aucune digression, aucune de ces excursions philosophiques qu’on trouve dans plusieurs de ses écrits, mais que la nature de celui-ci ne comportait pas ; car il en est du bien qu’on dit comme de celui qu’on fait ; ils ont tous deux leur moment qu’il faut savoir prendre et d’où dépend tout l’effet qu’ils doivent produire. »</p>

<p>Nous n’avons pas cru devoir indiquer par des signes particuliers les passages restitués dans notre édition. M. Guizot avait supprimé tantôt de simples membres de phrase qui lui paraissaient trop vifs, tantôt des pages entières qui lui semblaient arriérées, inutiles ou compromettantes. En ne tenant compte que du point de vue historique, nous n’aurions pas pu nous résoudre à supprimer même les titres d’ouvrages classiques indiqués par l’auteur, si démodés et si oubliés qu’ils soient maintenant. Nous espérons qu’à la lecture on partagera le sentiment qui nous les a fait conserver.</p>
<p>Comme les précédents éditeurs, nous avons fait. précéder le <hi rend="i">Plan d’une Université</hi> d’un <hi rend="i">Essai sur les Études en Russie</hi><note xml:id="PAG_00000417-note1"> Cet <hi rend="i">Essai</hi> a pris place, pour la première fois, dans les <hi rend="i">Œuvres de Diderot</hi>, édtion de Belin, 1818.</note>, parce qu’il est à présumer que Diderot, consulté par Catherine sur l’éducation publique, écrivit d’abord cet <hi rend="i">Essai</hi>, et qu’ensuite, sur une nouvelle demande, il envoya à l’impératrice le plan d’un système complet d’éducation.</p>
<p>En outre, nous pensons bien faire en plaçant ici les quelques lignes suivantes qui accompagnaient l’édition que Diderot s’était chargé de diriger à Amsterdam du compte rendu des premiers établissements d’utilité publique dus à la collaboration de l’Impératrice et de son ministre Betzky. Elles sont placées à la fin du second volume (et dernier) de cette publication et portent en tête :</p>
<label type="head">ADDITION DE L’ÉDITEUR M. D***.</label>
<p>Tels sont les plans et les statuts des différents établissements ordonnés par Sa Majesté Impériale.</p>
<p>Lorsque le temps et la constance de cette grande souveraine les auront conduits au point de perfection dont ils sont tous susceptibles et que plusieurs ont atteint, on visitera la Russie pour les connaître comme on visitait autrefois l’Egypte, Lacédémone et la Crète ; mais avec une curiosité qui sera, j’ose le dire, et mieux fondée et mieux récompensée. J’en appelle au témoignage de plusieurs étrangers qui récemment arrivés à Pétersbourg et incrédules dans les premiers instants, enchérissaient ensuite sur mes éloges.</p>
<p>Si l’on veut savoir à présent jusqu’où la nation est convaincue de l’importance de ces institutions, et jusqu’où elle en est reconnaissante, on en jugera par les honneurs qu’elle a décernés au patriote Betzky, pour avoir dignement secondé les vues de sa souveraine.</p>

<hi rend="i">414</hi> NOTICE PRÉLIMINAIRE.</p>
<p>Le Sénat lui a fait frapper une médaille d’or où l’on voit, d’un côté, le buste de M. Betzky, avec la légende : <hi rend="i">Jean, fils de Jean, Betzky</hi>. Le revers représente la reconnaissance avec ses attributs ordinaires ; elle est assise sur une pierre carrée ; à sa gauche est une pyramide qu’elle a fait ériger : des enfants y attachent un médaillon avec les chiffres I. B. Ces enfants sont les symboles des quatre établissements fondés par Catherine II. Le premier est la <hi rend="i">Maison d’éducation</hi> de Moscou : le second est <hi rend="i">l’Académie des beaux-arts :</hi> le troisième est la <hi rend="i">Communauté des demoiselles et des bourgeoises</hi> et le quatrième est le <hi rend="i">Corps des cadets de terre</hi>. Le fond est décoré du vaste et beau bâtiment de ces établissements patriotiques. La légende est : <hi rend="i">Pour l’amour de la patrie :</hi> et on lit dans l’exergue : <hi rend="i">Par le Sénat, le 20 novembre 1771</hi>. Cette date marque l’époque de la signature de trois nouveaux établissements, savoir : d’une <hi rend="i">Caisse de veuves</hi> ; d’une autre <hi rend="i">Caisse de dépôt</hi> ; et d’un <hi rend="i">Lombard</hi><note xml:id="PAG_00000418-note1"> Mont-de-piété.</note>
<hi rend="i"> :</hi> ils sont d’une si grande utilité pour toutes les classes de la société, qu’on doit les regarder comme le complément des privilèges accordés par Sa Majesté Impériale à la <hi rend="i">Maison d’éducation</hi> de Moscou.</p>
<p rend="left"> Cette médaille fut présentée à M. Betzky en plein Sénat, avec l’agrément de Sa Majesté, par M. le procureur général Wiazemsky, portant la parole au nom de la nation.</p>
<p>Nous avons trouvé aussi dans l’Introduction que le traducteur Clerc a mise à cet ouvrage une appréciation des exercices des cadets russes que l’on trouvera à la fin de ce volume.</p>

<head>I.</head>
<p>Lorsqu’on jette les yeux sur les progrès de l’esprit humain depuis l’invention de l’imprimerie, après cette longue suite de siècles où il est resté enseveli dans les plus profondes ténèbres, on remarque d’abord, qu’après la renaissance des lettres en Italie, la bonne culture, les meilleures écoles se sont établies dans les pays protestants, de préférence aux pays qui ont conservé la religion romaine, et qu’elles y ont fait jusqu’à ce jour les progrès les plus sensibles. Sans m’attacher à prouver cette assertion, il me suffira d’observer que l’esprit du clergé catholique, qui s’est emparé de tout temps de l’instruction publique, est entièrement opposé aux progrès des lumières et de là raison que tout favorise dans les pays protestants, et qu’il ne s’agit pas dans cette question d’examiner s’il n’a pas existé dans les pays catholiques de très-grands hommes depuis la renaissance des lettres ; mais si le grand nombre, si le corps de la nation est devenu plus éclairé et plus sensé : car le privilège du petit nombre de grandes têtes consiste à ne pas ressembler à leur siècle, et rien de leur part ne peut faire loi. Or on voit que, depuis l’époque de la réformation, tous les pays protestants ont fait des pas rapides vers une meilleure police, que les absurdités et les préjugés contraires au bon sens y ont diminué sensiblement, et qu’il n’en existe pas un seul qui, respectivement, ne soit plus florissant que tel pays catholique qu’on voudra lui comparer ; proportion gardée de leurs avantages et de ce que <pb xml:id="PAG_00000420" n="416"/>chacun devrait être. On peut même ajouter que les pays catholiques ont profité du reflet des lumières que les pays protestants leur ont renvoyé ; qu’un tel préjugé, enseveli par la raison dans des contrées où un clergé ambitieux n’avait plus l’intérêt ni le crédit de le soutenir, a entraîné la honte et enfin la ruine du même préjugé dans la contrée voisine, au grand déplaisir des prêtres. Il est clair, pour tous ceux qui ont des yeux, que sans les Anglais, la raison et la philosophie seraient encore dans l’enfance la plus méprisable en France, et que leurs vrais fondateurs parmi nous, Montesquieu et Voltaire, ont été les écoliers et les sectateurs des philosophes et des grands hommes d’Angleterre. C’est donc dans les pays protestants qu’il faut chercher les meilleures et les plus sages institutions pour l’instruction de la jeunesse<note xml:id="PAG_00000420-note1"> En vertu de ce premier paragraphe, je prends la liberté de conseiller à S. M. I. de faire communiquer ses vues à quelques professeurs des universités de Leipsick, do Gœttingue, de Leyde, d’Oxford, d’Edimbourg, de Glasgow. Il y aura peut-être dans leurs plans beaucoup de pédanteries ; mais Dieu, qui a favorisé son ointe de tous les dons, et, entre autres, de celui du laisser et du prendre, lorsqu’il le faut et comme il le faut, aura bientôt secoué entre ses mains augustes la poussière du pédantisme pour n’y laisser que le bon grain. J’ose recommander très-particulièrement M. le docteur Ernesti, à Leipsick, homme d’un mérite éminent, qui, ayant été toute sa vie occupé de l’éducation de la jeunesse dans toutes les espèces d’écoles, est plus capable que qui que ce soit de dresser un plan excellent. Il peut l’écrire en allemand. Si S. M. I. daigne le consulter, je ne demande, pour prix de l’avoir indiqué, que la faveur de lui être nommé comme celui qui l’a indiqué à S. M. Dans les universités d’Ecosse, il y a aussi d’excellentes têtes à consulter. (DIDEROT.)</note>.</p>

<p>On a raison de dire qu’il faut trois sortes d’écoles dans un pays bien policé.</p>

<head>III.</head>
<p>Les premières écoles sont les basses, les écoles à lire, à écrire et à compter. En Allemagne on les appelle <hi rend="i">Lese-Schreib und Rechen-Schulen</hi><note xml:id="PAG_00000420-note2"> J’observe qu’il serait bon, dans ces <hi rend="i">Lese-Schreib und Rechen-Schulen</hi>, de pousser l’instruction plus loin qu’elle ne va communément en Allemagne, et d’y faire enseigner, par exemple, à ceux qui se destinent aux professions mécaniques et au commerce, la manière de tenir les livres en parties doubles, la science du change, et tout ce qu’il est bon, dans ces professions, de savoir pour y devenir plus habile en moins de temps. (DIDEROT.) — Cette érudition de Diderot à propos du système d’enseignement en Allemagne ne doit pas trop étonner. Par Grimm, par le prince Henri de Prusse, par les Nassau-Saarbrttck, par les visites assez fréquentes de jeunes Allemands qu’il signale dans sa correspondance, et même par sa traversée de l’Allemagne pour se rendre en Russie, Diderot pouvait connaître assez bien un pays qu’il n’avait pas habité, il est vrai, mais que ceux qui y avaient séjourné assez longtemps, comme Voltaire, ne paraissent pas avoir apprécié comme lui. On voit, du reste, par son <hi rend="i">Voyage en Hollande</hi>, que, s’il n’était pas ami du déplacement, lorsqu’il se déplaçait, il mettait son temps à profit pour se rendre compte, non des particularités pittoresques, mais des choses utiles : mœurs, coutumes, produits, revenus, industrie, établissements publics, etc.</note>. Ces écoles y sont même séparées. On <pb xml:id="PAG_00000421" n="417"/>envoie d’abord les enfants à l’école à lire. Les unes de ces écoles sont pour les garçons, les autres pour les filles. Quand un enfant sait parfaitement lire, on l’envoie à l’école à écrire et à compter. On n’y apprend que les règles de l’arithmétique ; mais suffisamment pour qu’un enfant, au sortir de ces écoles, sache tous les calculs nécessaires dans le courant de la vie, et soit même en état d’apprendre les calculs plus compliqués des marchands et négociants. Ces basses écoles sont pour le peuple en général, parce que, depuis le premier ministre jusqu’au dernier paysan, il est bon que chacun sache lire, écrire et compter. Aussi, dans les pays protestants, il n’y a point de village, quelque chétif qu’il soit, qui n’ait son maître d’école ; et point de villageois, de quelque classe qu’il soit, qui ne sache lire, écrire et un peu compter. J’ai quelquefois ouï dire en Allemagne que cela avait ses inconvénients. La noblesse dit que cela rend le paysan chicaneur et processif. Les lettrés disent que cela est cause que tout cultivateur un peu à son aise, au lieu de laisser à son fils sa charrue, veut en faire un savant, un théologien, ou tout au moins un maître d’école. Je ne m’arrête pas beaucoup au grief de la noblesse ; peut-être se réduit-il à dire qu’un paysan qui sait lire et écrire est plus malaisé à opprimer qu’un autre. Quant au second grief, c’est au législateur à faire en sorte que la profession de cultivateur soit assez tranquille et estimée pour n’être pas abandonnée. Les hommes sont en général des animaux d’habitude, qui ne changent d’allure que lorsqu’ils sont vexés dans celle qu’ils avaient coutume de tenir. Or, dans un pays bien gouverné, aucune profession ne doit être exposée à des vexations. Du reste, chaque ordre de choses a ses inconvénients ; et c’est l’étude de l’homme d’État de retrancher les inconvénients en conservant les avantages. <pb xml:id="PAG_00000422" n="418"/>Mais ici les avantages me paraissent l’emporter infiniment. L’assujettissement à l’opération de lire, d’écrire, de calculer, donne une première façon à l’esprit grossier des peuples ; dont les suites, pour la police et la stabilité des gouvernements, ne sont pas, peut-être, calculables.</p>
<p>On apprend aussi dans ces écoles son catéchisme, c’est-àdire les premiers principes de sa religion, et l’on fait d’une pierre deux coups en se servant de ces livres pour y apprendre à lire. Il serait à désirer qu’on eût aussi des catéchismes de morale et de politique, c’est-à-dire des livrets où les premières notions des lois du pays, des devoirs des citoyens, fussent consignées pour l’instruction et l’usage du peuple ; et une espèce de catéchisme usuel, qui donnât une idée courte et claire des choses les plus communes de la vie civile, comme des poids et mesures, des différents états et professions, des usages que le dernier d’entre le peuple a intérêt de connaître, etc. Il n’est pas nécessaire d’ajouter que dans un pays où ces écoles ne seraient pas encore multipliées, il faudrait les introduire d’abord dans les villes, et de là, de proche en proche, dans les villages. Dans ces derniers, le maître d’école est de droit l’aide de camp du curé ; et comme l’institution des écoles est justement comptée parmi les œuvres pies, leur entretien est justement assis sur les revenus du clergé. En Allemagne, il y a, matin et soir, des heures fixes pour l’instruction publique, où tous les enfants assistent gratuitement ; mais, après ces heures publiques, le maître d’école en tient encore une privée pour les enfants des citoyens plus aisés, qui lui payent pour ces soins particuliers une modique rétribution.</p>

<p>La seconde sorte d’écoles sont ce qu’on appelle en Allemagne, dans les pays protestants, <hi rend="i">gymnasia</hi>, ou écoles illustres, écoles supérieures. Dans les pays catholiques, ces écoles appartiennent déjà aux universités. Dans les pays protestants, ce n’est qu’après avoir parcouru toutes les classes du <hi rend="i">gymnasium</hi> de sa ville, qu’on part pour l’université.</p>

<p rend="left"> Ces <hi rend="i">gymnasia</hi> sont partagés en six ou sept classes. Dans les uns c’est la plus basse qui s’appelle la première, dans les autres c’est la plus haute. Chaque classe a son préfet à demeure et qui ne monte qu’à titre de talent et de capacité à un poste plus haut. Les écoliers parcourent ces classes successivement, et ne sont admis dans une classe supérieure que lorsqu’ils savent tout ce qu’on apprend dans la classe précédente. On reste dans ces classes un an, six mois ; dans les plus basses, moins longtemps que dans les hautes. Ces écoles sont pour les enfants de la noblesse et des citoyens aisés du tiers état ; le peuple n’y envoie pas ses enfants, parce que, dès qu’ils savent lire et écrire, il en tire déjà parti, chacun dans sa profession et dans son ménage. On reste dans ces écoles illustres jusqu’à douze années en Allemagne, après quoi on va passer quatre années dans quelque université, et puis on est savant. Le terme de douze années m’a toujours paru un peu long, et je crois qu’il pourrait être abrégé considérablement. Ceux d’entre les écoliers qui ne se destinent pas aux études, c’est-à-dire qui ne veulent devenir ni théologiens, ni jurisconsultes, ni médecins, se contentent de passer cinq ou six années dans ces écoles, à fréquenter les trois ou quatre premières basses classes, après quoi ils quittent le <hi rend="i">gymnasium</hi> pour prendre le parti du commerce ou d’autres professions honorables. Ces <hi rend="i">gymnasia</hi> sont aussi fondés par le gouvernement, et l’instruction y est publique et gratuite. Mais après les heures publiques les préfets sont en usage de donner encore des leçons particulières pour une rétribution qui n’est pas forte ; et cet usage est bon à conserver, parce qu’il ménage au préfet le moyen d’améliorer son sort par son travail, et qu’il est juste que les enfants qui jouissent d’un peu de fortune en usent pour rendre leur instruction plus complète. Ces leçons particulières sont aussi une espèce de baromètre pour déterminer le mérite du préfet d’une classe : car lorsque ce préfet est sot ou paresseux, les parents ne sont pas assez dupes pour envoyer leurs enfants à ses leçons privées, et mon pédant reste sans pratique.</p>
<p rend="left"> On monte dans ces <hi rend="i">gymnasia</hi> de classe en classe avec <pb xml:id="PAG_00000424" n="420"/>beaucoup de solennité. Ordinairement les écoles sont sous l’inspection immédiate du magistrat de la ville où elles sont fondées, et ce sont les principaux de la magistrature, avec monsieur le surintendant ou le chef du clergé, qui se chargent de ce soin. On les appelle <hi rend="i">scolarches</hi>. Ils doivent présider à la visite des écoles, et veiller au maintien de l’ordre et de l’instruction publique. Tous les six mois il y a des exercices publics de classe en classe, auxquels les scolarches et les plus notables personnages ainsi que les parents assistent. Après ces exercices on distribue en grande solennité des prix aux écoliers de toutes les classes qui se sont distingués, et ceux qui ont bien rempli leurs devoirs dans une classe la quittent, et sont introduits par les scolarches dans la classe supérieure. Cela s’appelle la promotion, à laquelle, comme à tous les actes publics, on donne dans ces écoles un grand air d’importance et de publicité, ce qui est excellent pour entretenir l’émulation et enflammer la jeunesse, qui s’accoutume dès lors à se regarder comme la portion la plus intéressante et la plus précieuse de la nation, puisque c’est sur elle que repose la durée de sa gloire<note xml:id="PAG_00000424-note1"> Si j’ai bien pénétré les vues de l’ointe que le Seigneur a accordée à la Russie pour leur gloire réciproque, et pour se faire pardonner par moi plusieurs fredaines graves de ma connaissance, je dois croire que Sa Majesté cherche à introduire dans les villes de son empire la magistrature municipale, et à en étendre et relever les fonctions. Vue excellente, propre à perfectionner la police, vue honorée de toute mon approbation ! Eh bien, un des devoirs de ces magistrats sera de présider aux écoles publiques, et d’y faire la fonction de scolarche. (DIDEROT.)</note>.</p>

<p>Mais qu’apprend-on proprement dans ces écoles illustres ? Pas autre chose que le latin et un peu de grec. Dans les basses classes on enseigne le rudiment ou les premiers principes de la grammaire. A mesure qu’on monte, on lit les meilleurs auteurs, on compose, on apprend les éléments de la versification latine, on fait de la prose et des vers dans cette langue, tant bien que mal ; on étudie le grec. Ceux qui se vouent à la théologie, prennent dans les classes supérieures une teinture d’hébreu. On étudie aussi un peu sa langue maternelle ; et enfin, dans les hautes classes, après avoir exercé la rhétorique et tous ses tours <pb xml:id="PAG_00000425" n="421"/>de passe-passe, on prend une teinture de philosophie, avec laquelle on se met en chemin pour l’université.</p>
<p>C’est une grande question que de savoir si la seule étude des langues anciennes vaut le temps qu’on lui consacre, et si cette époque précieuse de la jeunesse ne pourrait pas être employée à des occupations plus importantes. Soit raison, soit préjugé, je croirai difficilement qu’on puisse se passer de la connaissance des Anciens. Cette littérature a une consistance, un attrait, une énergie, qui feront toujours le charme des grandes têtes. Mais je pense que l’étude des langues anciennes pourrait être abrégée considérablement, et mêlée de beaucoup de connaissances utiles. En général, dans l’établissement des écoles, on a donné trop d’importance et d’espace à l’étude des mots, il faut lui substituer aujourd’hui l’étude des choses<note xml:id="PAG_00000425-note1"> Nous en sommes encore à ressasser les mêmes arguments ; mais alors c’était avec nouveauté. On reconnaît là l’encyclopédiste.</note>. Je pense qu’on devrait donner dans les écoles une idée de toutes les connaissances nécessaires à un citoyen, depuis la législation jusqu’aux arts mécaniques, qui ont tant contribué aux avantages et aux agréments de la société ; et dans ces arts mécaniques, je comprends les professions de la dernière classe des citoyens. Le spectacle de l’industrie humaine est en lui-même grand et satisfaisant : il est bon de connaître les différents rapports par lesquels chacun contribue aux avantages de la société. Ces connaissances ont un attrait naturel pour les enfants dont la curiosité est la première qualité. D’ailleurs il y a dans les arts mécaniques les plus communs un raisonnement si juste, si compliqué, et cependant si lumineux, qu’on ne peut assez admirer la profondeur de la raison et du génie de l’homme, lorsque tant de sciences plus élevées ne servent qu’à nous démontrer l’absurdité de l’esprit humain.</p>
<p>J’oubliais de dire que dans ces écoles on cultive aussi la musique, et qu’elle est particulièrement enseignée à un certain nombre de pauvres écoliers qui, par une fondation particulière, sont nourris, logés et quelquefois vêtus sous l’inspection spéciale d’un préfet, et suivent d’ailleurs toutes les études avec les autres écoliers. Ces sortes de fondations peuvent avoir leurs avantages, en ce que l’enfant d’un artisan, d’un pauvre homme dépourvu de toute espèce de moyens, peut apporter en naissant <pb xml:id="PAG_00000426" n="422"/>des dispositions si heureuses, qu’il n’y ait rien de mieux que de venir à son secours, et de lui donner les moyens de développer les dons de la nature. Plus d’un grand homme a été redevable de sa première éducation à ces sortes de fondations. En France, cela s’appelle des <hi rend="i">bourses</hi>.</p>
<p>Il en est d’autres encore qu’on appelle <hi rend="i">stipendia</hi> ; car, en tout, on a cherché à décorer l’éducation publique et littéraire de termes militaires : ce sont des pensions plus ou moins fortes qu’on paye aux étudiants pendant les années de l’université, afin de les aider à subvenir aux frais de leur séjour et de leurs études.</p>
<p>J’oubliais encore de dire que dans ces écoles on étudie aussi les éléments de l’histoire, de la géographie ; on prend une teinture du blason, des généalogies des maisons souveraines, enfin de tout ce qui est nécessaire à un homme qui veut servir sa patrie avec quelque distinction<note xml:id="PAG_00000426-note1"> Je me garderai bien de dire à Sa Majesté Impériale s’il faut introduire en Russie l’étude du grec et du latin, ou destiner les écoles illustres, les <hi rend="i">gymnasia</hi>, à d’autres études : elle saura cela mieux que feu M. Wagner, et même mieux que cette <hi rend="sup">Mlle</hi> Cardel, qui fut en son temps le chandelier portant la lumière de son siècle, sans les avoir. Mais ce qu’il faut observer ici, c’est que l’étude des langues est devenue et devient tous les jours d’une telle étendue, qu’il ne sera plus possible à l’esprit humain d’y suffire. La connaissance des mots nuira à la connaissance des choses, l’étude des langues anciennes sera abandonnée pour celle des langues modernes. Le français, l’italien, l’anglais, l’allemand sont aujourd’hui quatre langues presque essentielles à l’homme qui a joui d’une éducation libérale. A mesure que les peuples se civiliseront, le nombre des langues essentielles augmentera ; car ce qu’il y a de moins douteux, c’est que les arts, les sciences et les lettres voyagent, et qu’il est impossible de les fixer. Cependant il faut posséder la langue d’un peuple pour ses anciennes richesses, tandis qu’il faut apprendre celle d’un autre pour ses richesses actuelles. Insensiblement la masse des connaissances devient trop forte pour l’étendue de l’esprit humain ; la confusion et la barbarie ont leur tour. Voilà la véritable clef de la fable allégorique de la tour de Babel. A cette époque, le monde était si ancien, que les fils des hommes avaient poussé leurs connaissances au plus haut degré. Ils étaient près d’atteindre le ciel, et d’en savoir aussi long que leur papa Dieu. Il ne restait à celui-ci, pour arrêter les progrès de cette tour, qui s’élevait à vue d’œil, et qui allait percer jusque dans son boudoir, que la ressource de la confusion des langues. C’est-à-dire que le grand nombre des nations savantes et policées obligea les hommes éclairés de chaque nation d’étudier une multitude si prodigieuse de langues nécessaires à la circulation des connaissances acquises, que leur tête en péta. Ils devinrent brouillons et imbéciles, ce fut à recommencer, et Dieu fut préservé une seconde fois du danger de voir ses secrets ébruités. (DIDEROT).</note>.</p>

<p>Lorsqu’on a parcouru toutes les classes d’un <hi rend="i">gymnasium</hi>, on en prend congé et l’on part pour l’université. Quatre facultés constituent l’essence d’une université, qui ne s’appelle ainsi que parce que toutes les études y sont rassemblées. Ces facultés sont celles de théologie, de jurisprudence, de médecine et de philosophie, qui comprend aussi les belles-lettres. L’étudiant qui arrive choisit d’abord une des trois premières facultés suivant l’état auquel il se destine, mais ses premières études regardent pourtant principalement la philosophie. Il apprend donc la logique, la métaphysique. On perd trop de temps avec ces fadaises, et c’est souvent avoir appris à déraisonner méthodiquement. <pb xml:id="PAG_00000427" n="423"/>Au lieu de donner six mois et plus à l’étude de la logique et de la métaphysique, et au bel art de l’argumentation, je crois qu’on ferait beaucoup mieux de s’appliquer tout de suite aux mathématiques, dont c’est le propre de rendre le raisonnement plus exact et l’esprit plus juste. Dans la faculté de philosophie on enseigne encore la morale, les humanités ou belles-lettres, l’éloquence, les antiquités, tout ce qui dépend de la belle littérature. Pour chacune de ces parties il y a des chaires et un professeur particulier, et c’est la réunion de ces chaires qui s’appelle faculté, comme la réunion des facultés s’appelle université. Les professeurs des universités ont une manière d’enseigner différente de celle des préfets des écoles ou collèges. Dans les écoles, l’écolier travaille sous l’inspection immédiate du préfet, qui donne à chacun sa tâche, qui examine, reprend, corrige l’un après l’autre. Dans les universités, chaque étudiant choisit l’objet et le nombre des cours qu’il veut suivre, et que les professeurs ont soin d’annoncer publiquement avec l’heure et le lieu. A l’heure indiquée le professeur monte en chaire, débite sa science, que les auditeurs recueillent, chacun comme il peut, les uns en écoutant, les autres en se faisant des notes pour aider leur mémoire. Ordinairement chaque professeur a un livre élémentaire imprimé qui sert de fondement à ses leçons, qu’il explique à ses auditeurs, et aux principes duquel <hi rend="sup">il</hi> ramène toutes les digressions dont il se sert pour rendre les éléments de chaque science plus frappants et plus sensibles. On conçoit qu’un certain nombre de livres élémentaires, faits avec clarté et avec précision, est une des choses les plus désirables pour l’avancement des sciences et des lettres.</p>

<p>Dans les facultés supérieures, il y a aussi plusieurs chaires ; dans la faculté théologique, il y en a pour l’explication des livres sacrés, pour l’étude des langues sacrées, pour la polémique ou controverse, pour l’histoire ecclésiastique etc., etc., etc. Dans la faculté de droit, il y a pareillement des chaires pour l’étude du droit romain, du droit canon, du droit commun. En Allemagne l’étude du droit de la nature et des gens est fort cultivée. Elle est excellente pour le développement des bons esprits. L’étude du droit public du saint Empire et des lois qui ont fait subsister ce corps, tant bien que mal, jusqu’à ce jour, fait aussi une grande partie de l’occupation de la jeunesse ; et c’est cette chaire, suivant qu’elle est bien ou mal remplie, qui décide en partie de la réputation de l’université. Dans la faculté de médecine, les différentes chaires ont pour objet la théorie et la pratique de cette science problématique, l’anatomie, la pharmacie, la chimie, et l’histoire naturelle, qui appartient en partie à la faculté de médecine, en partie à celle de philosophie<note xml:id="PAG_00000428-note1"> Il n’est pas nécessaire de dire que dans les universités de la Russie il faudra des chaires pour l’étude du code Catherine, quoiqu’il ne soit pas bon peut-être de permettre qu’on le commente par écrit, parce que ce qui est commenté est bientôt dénaturé. <p>Les universités jouissent en Allemagne, et surtout dans les pays protestants, de grands privilèges et de grandes immunités. L’empereur seul a le droit de les accorder. Le souverain du pays a le soin de les fonder. Elles ont ordinairement une juridiction fort étendue sur leurs citoyens. L’université de Leipsick ne ressort que du souverain, exerce sur les siens le droit de vie et de mort. Un étudiant n’est justiciable que de l’université où il s’est fait inscrire, et le magistrat de la ville où l’université est établie n’a aucune juridiction sur lui. C’est cette importance qu’on a donnée ou laissée dans les pays protestants aux universités qui les a rendues si florissantes. Il est donc bon de les établir dans des villes qui ne soient ni capitales, ni résidences, ni port, parce <pb xml:id="PAG_00000429" n="425"/>que la présence du souverain absorbe tout, parce que le trop grand mouvement et le bruit ne causent que des distractions, parce qu’il est bon que l’université soit tout dans les endroits où elle est établie, et que l’habitant regarde l’étudiant avec quelque considération, ce qui arrivera toutes les fois que la ville tirera un profit sensible du séjour de la jeunesse.</p>

<p>Le chef suprême de l’université s’appelle recteur magnifique. Il est choisi parmi les professeurs par voie de scrutin, et dans les unes il exerce cette charge un an, dans d’autres six mois. Il a conservé dans les pays protestants le rang de prélat, séance et voix parmi les États du pays. En Saxe, le recteur de l’université de Leipsick est la cinquième personne après l’électeur. Dans plusieurs pays protestants, c’est l’héritier présomptif de la couronne ou de la souveraineté qui prend le titre d’honneur de recteur de l’université, et alors le recteur véritable s’appelle prorecteur. Son conseil est composé de tous les professeurs ordinaires et publics, qui se partagent l’administration des biens de l’université, et jugent avec lui tout ce qui est du ressort de sa juridiction. Cette juridiction est ordinairement très-bien exercée, puisque c’est dans le sein des universités et particulièrement des facultés de droit que se forment les juges de tous les tribunaux supérieurs et inférieurs du pays.</p>

<p>Chaque faculté a des titres d’honneur qu’elle accorde avec solennité à ceux qui ont suivi ses différentes leçons pendant trois ou quatre années, et qui, au bout de ce terme, sont en état de soutenir les examens qu’on fait subir à ceux qui se présentent pour obtenir ces honneurs académiques. Cela s’appelle la promotion, qui se fait tous les ans dans les universités avec beaucoup de cérémonies. Indépendamment des examens, le candidat est obligé de soutenir publiquement des thèses, sous la ’ présidence d’un professeur, contre les attaques des autres, et ce n’est qu’après avoir subi toutes ces épreuves qu’il reçoit le <pb xml:id="PAG_00000430" n="426"/>bonnet de docteur en théologie, ou en droit, ou en médecine, ou de maître ès arts en philosophie. Il y a des pays où l’on ne peut entrer dans aucune charge quand on n’a pas pris ses degrés dans l’université. Dans d’autres on ne l’exige que de ceux qui veulent exercer la médecine et jouir du droit de tuer méthodiquement. Tout homme qui a pris ses degrés dans une université est en droit d’y donner des cours particuliers aux étudiants qui voudront le payer, quoiqu’il n’y ait que les professeurs publics de gagés et d’obligés à des leçons gratuites.</p>

<head>XII.</head>
<p>Ordinairement les cours publics sont peu suivis, et, pour dire la vérité, peu soignés par les professeurs. Ceux-ci aiment mieux réserver tous leurs soins à leurs leçons privées, parce que celles-ci sont payées à part par les étudiants, et que les gages donnés par le gouvernement courent toujours, sans qu’on s’informe si un professeur a été exact ou non à ses leçons publiques. Cet abus, énorme en apparence, a peu d’inconvénients. La rétribution qu’un professeur exige de chaque auditeur, pour un cours de six mois ou d’un an, est bornée, dans les universités d’Allemagne, à quatre ou six écus au plus ; cela n’est pas ruineux pour les étudiants, et lorsqu’un professeur a de la réputation, il a aisément un auditoire de deux cents personnes. Il peut enseigner quatre ou six heures par jour, ce qui lui fait un sort assez considérable, sans qu’il en coûte beaucoup à chaque étudiant en particulier, et toujours relativement à ses talents et à sa capacité, parce qu’un professeur sans talents est un professeur sans auditeurs. Il faut dire aussi que s’ils négligent les leçons publiques et gratuites, ils sont, d’un autre côté, très-faciles à accorder aux pauvres étudiants sans fortune l’entrée de leurs leçons gratis.</p>

<p>En fondant la faculté de médecine d’une université, il ne faut pas oublier d’y comprendre l’établissement des chaires de chirurgie. Cette science si utile, et qui a été portée en France</p>

<p>Les professeurs des différentes facultés, indépendamment de leur devoir d’enseigner, forment encore un corps particulier, qui a son travail et ses séances, et auquel ceux qui, sans être professeurs publics, ont pris leurs degrés, peuvent être agrégés. Ce travail consiste à faire des réponses aux différents mémoires qui sont adressés aux facultés, à celle de médecine par les malades et souvent par le gouvernement dans les cas d’épidémie, ou pour la police des hôpitaux et autres objets de la salubrité publique. La faculté de théologie a aussi ses pratiques. Celle de droit est la plus employée.</p>

<p>C’est un très-bel usage en Allemagne que celui d’envoyer les pièces des procès les plus compliqués, les plus délicats, à quelque faculté de droit d’une université, en supprimant le nom des parties, et faisant ainsi juger le procès sous des noms supposés par la faculté ; c’est-à-dire par une assemblée de jurisconsultes, qui, ne connaissant aucun des intéressés, sont nécessairement exempts de tout soupçon de partialité, de tout parti, de toute passion quelconque qui se glisse quelquefois dans les jugements des hommes les plus intègres d’une manière imperceptible, et à eux-mêmes inconnue. Le tribunal, qui consulte ainsi la faculté (ou même les facultés de plusieurs universités sur le même procès), n’est pas obligé de suivre leur décision, il reste le maître de prononcer suivant ses principes et ses lumières ; mais dans les villes impériales, par exemple, où le magistrat est intéressé à convaincre ses sujets de la plus grande intégrité et impartialité dans l’administration de la justice, il s’en tient volontiers, et surtout dans les cas criminels, à la décision d’une faculté. Ce travail est payé, et fait un revenu assez honnête pour une faculté qui a la réputation d’être bien composée. On sent aussi que la vie des membres d’une telle <pb xml:id="PAG_00000432" n="428"/>faculté doit être laborieuse, puisqu’indépendamment des soins qu’ils donnent à l’instructin de la jeunesse, ils sont encore les oracles des tribunaux intérieurs et étrangers, et que toutes leurs décisions, devant être motivées, demandent un travail raisonné.</p>

<head rend="uc center">De l’instruction.</head>
<p>Instruire une nation, c’est la civiliser ; y éteindre les connaissances, c’est la ramener à l’état primitif de barbarie. La Grèce fut barbare ; elle s’instruisit et devint florissante. Qu’estelle aujourd’hui ? Ignorante et barbare. L’Italie fut barbare ; elle s’instruisit et devint florissante : lorsque les arts et les sciences s’en éloignèrent, que devint-elle ? Barbare. Tel fut aussi le sort de l’Afrique et de l’Egypte, et telle sera la destinée des empires dans toutes les contrées de la terre et dans tous les siècles à venir.</p>
<p>L’ignorance est le partage de l’esclave et du sauvage. L’instruction donne à l’homme de la dignité, et l’esclave ne tarde pas à sentir qu’il n’est pas né pour la servitude. Le sauvage perd cette férocité des forêts qui ne reconnaît point de maître, et prend à sa place une docilité réfléchie qui le soumet et l’attache à des lois faites pour son bonheur. Sous un bon souverain c’est le meilleur des sujets ; c’est le plus patient sous un souverain insensé.</p>
<p>Après les besoins du corps qui ont rassemblé les hommes pour lutter contre la nature, leur mère commune et leur infatigable ennemie, rien ne les rapproche davantage et ne les serre plus étroitement que les besoins de l’âme. L’instruction adoucit les caractères, éclaire sur les devoirs, subtilise les vices, les étouffe ou les voile, inspire l’amour de l’ordre, de la justice et des vertus, et accélère la naissance du bon goût dans toutes les <pb xml:id="PAG_00000434" n="430"/>choses de la vie. Les sauvages font des voyages immenses sans se parler, parce que les sauvages sont ignorants. Les hommes instruits se cherchent ; ils aiment à se voir et à s’entretenir. La science éveille le désir de la considération. On veut être désigné du doigt, et faire dire de soi : <hi rend="i">Le voilà, c’est lui</hi><note xml:id="PAG_00000434-note1"> « At pulchrum et digito monstrari, et dicier : hic est. » PERSE, <hi rend="i">Sat</hi>. I, V. 28.
</note>. De ce désir naissent des idées d’honneur et de gloire, et ces deux sentiments qui élèvent l’âme et qui l’agrandissent, répandent en même temps une teinte de délicatesse sur les mœurs, les procédés et les discours. J’oserais assurer que la pureté de la morale a suivi les progrès des vêtements depuis la peau de la bête jusqu’à l’étoffe de soie.</p>
<p>Combien de vertus délicates que l’esclave et le sauvage ignorent ! Si l’on croyait que ces vertus, fruits du temps et des lumières, sont de convention, l’on se tromperait ; elles tiennent à la science des mœurs comme la feuille tient à l’arbre qu’elle embellit.</p>
<p>Convaincue de ces vérités, Sa Majesté demande le plan d’une université ou d’une école publique de toutes les sciences. L’objet est de la plus grande importance, la tâche d’une étendue peut-être au-dessus de mes forces ; mais le zèle, qui quelquefois supplée au talent, a toujours excusé les défauts de l’ouvrage. J’obéis donc.</p>
<p>Je serai bref. Peu de lignes, mais claires ; peu d’idées, mais fécondes, s’il se peut ; poser les principes généraux ou tirer les grandes conséquences et négliger les exceptions ; surtout rien de systématique. Le meilleur des plans, en toute circonstance, mais spécialement dans celle-ci, est celui qui réunit le plus d’avantages avec le moins d’inconvénients. Une objection ne signifie rien, car à quoi n’objecte-t-on pas ? Plusieurs objections pourraient ne pas signifier davantage, puisqu’il ne serait pas impossible que le plan qui en fournirait le plus ne fût encore le meilleur.</p>

<head rend="uc center">Des auteurs qui ont écrit de l’instruction publique.</head>
<p>Pour satisfaire aux ordres de Sa Majesté et répondre aussi bien que je le pouvais à la confiance dont elle m’honore, j’ai <pb xml:id="PAG_00000435" n="431"/>commencé par m’instruire de ce que les hommes les plus éclairés de ma nation ont, autrefois ou récemment, publié sur cette matière. Tous ont assez bien connu les vices de notre éducation publique, aucun d’eux qui nous ait indiqué les vrais moyens de la rectifier ; nulle distinction entre ce qu’il importe à tous de savoir et ce qu’il n’importe d’enseigner qu’à quelques-uns ; nul égard ni à l’utilité plus ou moins générale des connaissances, ni à l’ordre des études qui devrait en être le corollaire. Partout la liaison essentielle des sciences ou ignorée ou négligée. Pas le moindre soupçon que quelques-unes, nécessaires dans toutes les conditions de la société, et ne tenant à d’autres que par un fil trop long et trop délié, semblent exiger et exigent un cours séparé qui marche parallèlement au premier. Rollin, le célèbre Rollin, n’a d’autre but que de faire des prêtres ou des moines, des poètes ou des orateurs ; c’est bien là ce dont il s’agit !…</p>

<item> — Aigle de l’université de Paris, je vais vous le dire : il s’agit de donner au souverain des sujets zélés et fidèles, à l’empire des citoyens utiles ; à la société des particuliers instruits, honnêtes et même aimables ; à la famille de bons époux et de bons pères ; à la république des lettres quelques hommes de grand goût, et à la religion des ministres édifiants, éclairés et paisibles. Ce n’est point un petit objet. </item>

<p>L’enseignement ou l’ordre des devoirs et des études n’est point arbitraire, et la durée n’en est pas l’affaire d’un jour. Ce n’est pas une tâche facile ni pour les maîtres ni pour les élèves. On peut l’alléger sans doute, mais en faire un amusement, je n’en crois rien. Il faudrait se moquer de la simplicité de ces bonnes gens qui ont prétendu former d’honnêtes et habiles citoyens, des hommes utiles, de grands hommes, en se promenant, en causant, en plaisantant ; accoutumer la jeunesse à la pratique éclairée des vertus et l’initier aux sciences par manière de passe-temps ; oui, certes, il faudrait s’en moquer si l’on ne respectait la bonté de leur âme et leur tendre compassion poulies années innocentes de notre vie.</p>
<p>Ne tourmentons pas l’homme inutilement, mais ne cherchons pas à arracher toutes les épines du chemin qui conduit à la science, à la vertu et à la gloire ; nous n’y réussirions pas.</p>

<p>Le temple de la Gloire est situé au sommet d’un roc escarpé, à côté de celui de la Science. Le chemin qui aboutit à la vertu et au bonheur est étroit et pénible. Le travail l’abrège et l’adoucit par la bonne méthode ; cherchons-la. Ne nous dissimulons point à nous-mêmes, ni aux élèves, que leurs progrès ne peuvent être que le fruit de l’opiniâtreté. Que les maîtres se consolent par l’importance du service qu’ils rendent à la patrie, et que les élèves soient encouragés par l’espoir de la récompense qui les attend : la considération publique.</p>
<p>On ne trompe guère impunément ni les hommes ni les enfants ; et peut-être vaudrait-il mieux exagérer à ceux-ci la difficulté de leur tâche que la leur dérober. On ne peut leur en imposer longtemps, et, désabusés une fois, ils se dégoûtent ou se découragent.</p>

<head rend="uc center">Objection et réponse.</head>
<p>Mais, dira-t-on, telle est la diversité des caractères qu’il faut, à ceux-ci montrer la difficulté plus grande, à ceux-là, moindre qu’elle ne l’est. Cela se peut ; mais, pour le grand nombre, l’exacte vérité, qui est presque toujours sans fâcheuse conséquence, est à préférer à la dissimulation. Qu’ils voient donc tout l’espace qu’ils ont à parcourir, mais qu’en même temps ils soient bien persuadés et du désir et des moyens qu’on a de les secourir. Et puis leur demander à tout moment : Voulez-vous être un ignorant, un sot ?… Vous répondez que non ?… Eh bien ! soyez donc diligents et dociles.</p>
<p>Tous ces beaux livres d’éducation publique bien fermés, la première réflexion qui s’est offerte à ma pensée, c’est qu’autant d’hommes éclairés à qui le problème de Sa Majesté Impériale aurait été proposé, autant de solutions différentes. Le théologien aurait rapporté tout à Dieu ; le médecin, tout à la santé ; le jurisconsulte, tout à la législation ; le militaire tout à la guerre ; le géomètre, tout aux mathématiques ; le bel esprit, tout aux lettres ; et chacun eût été le pendant de Marcel<note xml:id="PAG_00000436-note1"> Maître de danse dont on cite plus communément le mot : « Que de choses dans un menuet ! »</note>, qui croyait qu’un empire ne pouvait être que mal gouverné lorsqu’on n’y dansait pas supérieurement le menuet.</p>

<p>Assez versé dans toutes les sciences pour en connaître le prix, pas assez profond dans aucune pour me livrer à une préférence de métier, je les ordonnerai toutes sans partialité.</p>

<head rend="uc center">Qu’est-ce qu’une Université ?</head>
<p>Une université est une école dont la porte est ouverte indistinctement à tous les enfants d’une nation et où des maîtres stipendiés par l’État les initient à la connaissance élémentaire de toutes les sciences.</p>
<p>Je dis <hi rend="i">indistinctement</hi>, parce qu’il serait aussi cruel qu’absurde de condamner à l’ignorance les conditions subalternes de la société. Dans toutes, il est des connaissances dont on ne saurait être privé sans conséquence. Le nombre des chaumières et des autres édifices particuliers étant à celui des palais dans le rapport de dix mille à un, il y a dix mille à parier contre un que le génie, les talents et la vertu sortiront plutôt d’une chaumière que d’un palais.</p>

<item> — Oui, la vertu, parce qu’il faut plus de raison, plus de lumières et de force qu’on ne le suppose communément pour être vraiment homme de bien. Est-on homme de bien sans justice, et a-t-on de la justice sans lumières ?… </item>

<p>Moins il y a d’opulence autour du berceau de l’enfant qui naît, mieux les parents conçoivent la nécessité de l’éducation, plus sérieusement et plus tôt l’enfant est appliqué. Accoutumé au spectacle d’une vie laborieuse, la fatigue de l’étude lui en paraît moins ingrate. Les parents d’un enfant né dans la pauvreté obtiennent d’une réprimande peu ménagée ce que les caresses d’un père opulent, les larmes d’une mère ne pourraient obtenir d’un enfant corrompu par l’assurance d’une grande fortune.</p>
<p>Les efforts du premier se soutiennent par la sévérité dont on châtie sa négligence ou sa paresse. Sans cesse averti du sort qui l’attend s’il ne profite pas du temps et des maîtres, une menace réitérée l’aiguillonne. Lui-même ne tarde pas à pressentir d’instinct qu’il n’a rien de mieux à faire pour son bonheur que d’exceller dans la carrière qu’il suit, et qu’il a tout à espérer de ses progrès, rien de la protection ; leçon qui ne lui est que <pb xml:id="PAG_00000438" n="434"/>trop fréquemment et trop fortement inculquée par la vile et funeste prédilection des maîtres pour les enfants des riches et par leur utile sévérité pour les enfants des pauvres.</p>
<p>A proprement parler, une école publique n’est instituée que pour les enfants des pères dont la modique fortune ne suffirait pas à la dépense d’une éducation domestique et que leurs fonctions journalières détourneraient du soin de la surveiller ; c’est le gros d’une nation.</p>

<head rend="uc center">De l’Enseignement public.</head>
<p>Mais des lois propres à la généralité des esprits ne peuvent être des lois particulières ; utiles au grand nombre, il faut nécessairement que quelques individus en soient lésés.</p>
<p>La capacité ou l’incapacité d’un sujet rare par son intelligence ou par sa stupidité décide la sorte d’instruction forte ou faible qui lui convient. La portée commune de l’esprit humain est la règle d’une éducation publique.</p>
<p>La manière d’élever cent étudiants dans une école est précisément l’inverse de la manière d’en enseigner un seul à côté de soi.</p>
<p>Mais si l’objet de l’enseignement et l’étendue des leçons doivent se proportionner à la pluralité, il s’ensuit que le génie qui marche à grands pas sera quelquefois sacrifié à la tourbe qui chemine ou se traîne après lui.</p>
<p>Mais est-ce qu’on élève le génie ? Il suffit qu’une éducation publique ne l’étouffé pas.</p>

<head rend="uc center">Qu’est-ce que notre Université ?</head>
<p>Qu’était la France sous Charlemagne, l’Angleterre sous Alfred ? Celui-ci fonda les écoles d’Oxford et de Cambridge, qui se sont successivement perfectionnées, mais qui sont encore loin de ce qu’elles pourraient être.</p>
<p>La sottise ou l’intérêt du grand Constantin, qui résigna presque toutes les fonctions importantes de l’État aux prêtres chrétiens, a laissé des traces si profondes qu’elles ne s’effaceront peut-être jamais.</p>
<p>Charlemagne, né dans un temps où lire, écrire et balbutier de mauvais latin n’était pas un mérite commun, fonda notre pauvre <pb xml:id="PAG_00000439" n="435"/>université ; il la fonda gothique, elle est restée gothique telle qu’il l’a fondée ; et malgré ses vices monstrueux, contre lesquels les hommes instruits de ces deux derniers siècles n’ont cessé de réclamer et qui subsistent toujours, on lui doit la naissance de tout ce qui s’est fait de bon depuis son origine jusqu’à présent.</p>
<p>Un savant du <num>XII<hi rend="sup">e</hi></num> et du <num>XIII<hi rend="sup">e</hi></num> siècle n’était qu’un misérable ergoteur, un impertinent très-insupportable dans toute la valeur du terme ; mais cet impertinent était considéré. L’admiration, générale qu’il obtint sans la mériter soutint le désir de savoir ; le goût des futilités scolastiques passa, celui de la vraie science parut, et tous les grands hommes des siècles suivants sortirent d’autour de ces chaires qu’avaient autrefois occupées Thomas d’Aquin, Albert le Grand, Abeilard, Jean Scot, et qu’occupent aujourd’hui des maîtres à peu près leurs contemporains d’études.</p>

<head rend="uc center">De notre Faculté des arts.</head>
<p>C’est dans les mêmes écoles qu’on étudie encore aujourd’hui, sous le nom de belles-lettres, deux langues mortes qui ne sont utiles qu’à un très-petit nombre de citoyens ; c’est là qu’on les étudie pendant six à sept ans sans les apprendre ; que, sous le nom de rhétorique, on enseigne l’art de parler avant l’art de penser, et celui de bien dire avant que d’avoir des idées ; que, sous le nom de logique, on se remplit la tête des subtilités d’Aristote et de sa très-sublime et très-inutile théorie du syllogisme, et qu’on délaye en cent pages obscures ce qu’on pourrait exposer clairement en quatre ; que, sous le nom de morale, je ne sais ce qu’on dit, mais je sais qu’on ne dit pas un mot ni des qualités de l’esprit, ni de celles du cœur, ni des passions, ni des vices, ni des vertus, ni des devoirs, ni des lois, ni des contrats, et que si l’on demandait à l’élève, au sortir de sa classe, qu’est-ce que la vertu ? il ne saurait que répondre à cette question, qui embarrasserait peut-être le maître ; que, sous le nom de métaphysique, on agite sur la durée, l’espace, l’être en général, la possibilité, l’essence, l’existence, la distinction des deux substances, des thèses aussi frivoles qu’épineuses, les premiers éléments du scepticisme et du fanatisme, le germe de la malheureuse facilité de répondre à tout, et de <pb xml:id="PAG_00000440" n="436"/>la confiance plus malheureuse encore qu’on a répondu à des difficultés formidables avec quelques mots indéfinis et indéfinissables sans les trouver vides de sens ; que, sous le nom de physique, on s’épuise en disputes sur les éléments de la matière et les systèmes du monde ; pas un mot d’histoire naturelle, pas un mot de bonne chimie, très-peu de choses sur le mouvement et la chute des corps ; très-peu d’expériences, moins encore d’anatomie, rien de géographie. A l’exception des premiers principes de l’arithmétique, de l’algèbre et de la géométrie, dont l’enseignement est dû à un de mes anciens maîtres<note xml:id="PAG_00000440-note1"> Rivard. Voyez note 2, p. 452, t. II. Il en sera question encore.</note>, presque rien qui vaille la peine d’être retenu et qu’on n’apprît beaucoup mieux en quatre fois moins de temps.</p>
<p>Le seul avantage qu’on n’avait point en vue et qu’on remporte de nos écoles, c’est l’habitude de s’appliquer, et de s’appliquer constamment à des choses frivoles mais difficiles, habitude qui donne une merveilleuse facilité pour des objets plus importants dans toutes les fonctions de la société ; habitude qui distingue singulièrement un homme d’un autre, surtout si l’usage du inonde guérit le premier de l’ergoterie, ce qui n’arrive pas toujours.</p>
<p>Voilà donc le fruit de sept à huit années d’un pénible travail et d’une prison continue.</p>
<p>Je ne crois pas que les universités d’Allemagne soient beaucoup mieux ordonnées que les nôtres. La méthode barbare de Wolf y a perdu le bon goût.</p>
<p>L’école de Leyde, autrefois si vantée pour ses Vitriarius et ses Bœrhaave, n’est plus rien. Le Philopœmen de cette université, l’anatomiste Albinus vient de mourir, et le célèbre Camper, trop envié, n’a pu le remplacer.</p>
<p>Je reviens à notre université. A l’extrémité de cette longue et stérile avenue qu’on appelle la <hi rend="i">Faculté des arts</hi>, sur laquelle on s’est ennuyé et fatigué sans fruit pendant sept à huit ans, s’ouvrent trois vestibules par lesquels on entre ou dans la <hi rend="i">Faculté de théologie</hi>, ou dans la <hi rend="i">Faculté de droit</hi>, ou dans la <hi rend="i">Faculté de médecine</hi>.</p>
<p>Jusque-là, on n’avait été qu’écolier ; c’est ici qu’on prend le titre de docteur. Pour celui de docte, c’est autre chose.</p>

<p>L’intention de Sa Majesté Impériale n’est pas sans doute que son université soit calquée sur ce modèle, et elle me permettra d’ajouter ni la mienne.</p>

<p>Notre Faculté de droit est misérable. On n’y lit pas un mot du droit français ; pas plus du droit des gens que s’il n’y en avait point ; rien de notre code ni civil ni criminel ; rien de notre procédure, rien de nos lois, rien de nos coutumes, rien des constitutions de l’État ; rien du droit des souverains, rien de celui des sujets ; rien de la liberté, rien de la propriété, pas davantage des offices et des contrats.</p>

<item> — On s’occupe du droit romain dans toutes ses branches, droit qui n’a presque aucun rapport avec le nôtre ; en sorte que celui qui vient d’être décoré du bonnet de docteur en droit est aussi empêché, si quelqu’un lui corrompt sa fille, lui enlève sa femme ou lui conteste son champ, que le dernier des citoyens. Toutes ses belles connaissances lui seraient infiniment utiles s’il s’appelait Mœvius ou Sempronius et que nous rétrogradions aux temps d’Honorius ou d’Arcadius ; c’est là qu’il plaiderait, supérieurement sa cause. Sous Louis XVI, il est aussi sot que l’habitant de Chaillot et bien plus sot que le paysan de Basse-Normandie. La faculté de droit n’habite plus un vieux bâtiment <pb xml:id="PAG_00000442" n="438"/>gothique, mais elle parle goth sous les superbes arcades de l’édifice moderne qu’on lui a élevé<note xml:id="PAG_00000442-note1"> Place Sainte-Geneviève. La faculté de droit avait habité jusqu’en 1771 la rue Jean-de-Beauvais. A cette époque, Soufflot avait commencé le bâtiment actuel qui ne fut achevé qu’en 1823.</note>.</item>

<head rend="uc center">De notre Faculté de théologie.</head>
<p>La Faculté de théologie a réglé les études sur les circonstances présentes ; elles sont tournées vers la controverse avec les protestants, les luthériens, les sociniens, les déistes et la nuée des incrédules modernes. Elle est, elle-même, une excellente école d’incrédulité ; il y a peu de sorbonistes qui ne recèlent sous leur fourrure ou le déisme ou l’athéisme. Ils n’en sont que plus intolérants et plus brouillons ; ils le sont ou par caractère, ou par ambition, ou par intérêt, ou par hypocrisie. Ce sont les sujets de l’État les plus inutiles, les plus intraitables et les plus dangereux. Eux et leurs adhérents, prêtres ou moines, ont souvent abusé du droit de haranguer le peuple assemblé. Si j’étais souverain et que je pensasse que tous les jours de fêtes et de dimanches, entre onze heures et midi, cent cinquante mille de mes sujets disent à tous les autres et leur font croire, au nom de Dieu, tout ce qui convient au démon du fanatisme et de l’orgueil qui les possède, j’en frémirais de terreur.</p>
<p>Sa Majesté Impériale ne veut certainement point de ces genslà, et s’il lui faut des prêtres, elle les demande sans doute édifiants, éclairés et tranquilles.</p>

<p>Notre Faculté de médecine est la meilleure des quatre ; il y a peu de chose à rectifier. On y enseigne l’anatomie, la chirurgie, le traitement des maladies dans toutes ses branches, les éléments d’histoire naturelle, la botanique, la chimie et la pharmacie ; il s’agirait seulement de fixer l’ordre et la durée de ces études. D’ailleurs point de pratique, et c’est un grand défaut ; combien de choses qui tiennent à l’art de guérir qu’on ne peut apprendre ni dans des livres ni dans des leçons ! Est-ce d’après * le discours d’un professeur que vous discernerez un pouls fort <pb xml:id="PAG_00000443" n="439"/>ou faible, lent ou vite, large ou serré, régulier ou sautillant, élevé ou concentré ? Quelle description assez vigoureuse peut donner la notion précise d’une sanie mûre ou crue, de bonne ou de mauvaise qualité, vieille ou nouvelle, alcalescente ou acrimonieuse ? Un jeune médecin fait donc ses premiers essais sur nous, et ne devient un homme habile qu’à force d’assassinats<note xml:id="PAG_00000443-note1"> Il n’y avait point, au temps de Diderot, de chaires de clinique en France ; Bœrhaave à Leyde, Stahl à Vienne, avaient cependant donné l’exemple. Turgot avait tenté cette réforme, mais ce ne fut qu’à la fin de la Révolution qu’elle fut appliquée. Corvisart, médecin du Directoire, fut le premier maître de la clinique créée à l’hôpital de la Charité.</note>. Nous avons écorché le centaure jusqu’aux genoux, mais le vieil animal marche en traînant sa peau.</p>

<p>Ce qui concerne l’éducation publique n’a rien de variable, rien qui dépende essentiellement des circonstances. Le but en sera le même dans tous les siècles : faire des hommes vertueux et éclairés.</p>
<p>L’ordre des devoirs et des instructions est aussi inaltérable que le lien des connaissances entre elles. Procéder de la chose facile à la chose difficile ; aller depuis le premier pas jusqu’au dernier, de ce qui est le plus utile à ce qui l’est moins, de ce qui est nécessaire à tous à ce qui ne l’est qu’à quelques-uns ; épargner le temps et la fatigue, ou proportionner l’enseignement à l’âge et les leçons à la capacité moyenne des esprits.</p>

<head rend="uc center">Précaution importante.</head>
<p>Si le plan général est au-dessus des ressources du moment, attendre d’un avenir plus favorable son entière et parfaite exécution, mais ne rien abandonner au caprice de l’avenir ; en user avec une maison d’éducation publique comme en use un architecte intelligent avec un propriétaire borné dans ses moyens ; si celui-ci n’a point de quoi fournir subitement aux frais de tout l’édifice, l’autre creuse des fondements, pose les premières pierres, élève une aile, et cette aile est celle qu’il fallait d’abord élever ; et lorsqu’il est forcé de suspendre son travail, il laissé à la partie construite des pierres d’attente qui se <pb xml:id="PAG_00000444" n="440"/>remarquent, et entre les mains du propriétaire un plan général auquel, à la reprise du bâtiment, on se conformera sous peine de ne retirer de la dépense qu’on a faite et de celle qu’on fera qu’un amas confus de pièces belles ou laides, mais contradictoires entre elles et ne formant qu’un mauvais ensemble.</p>

<head rend="uc center">Phénomène singulier.</head>
<p>N’est-ce pas un phénomène bien étonnant que des écoles d’éducation publique barbares et gothiques, se soutenant avec tous leurs défauts, au centre d’une nation éclairée, à côté de trois célèbres Académies, après l’expulsion des mauvais maîtres connus sous le nom de jésuites, malgré la réclamation constante de tous les ordres de l’État, au détriment de la nation, à sa honte, au préjudice des premières années de toute la jeunesse d’un royaume et au mépris d’une multitude d’ouvrages excellents, du moins quant à la partie où l’on s’est attaché à démontrer les vices de cette éducation.</p>

<head rend="uc center">Raison de ce phénomène.</head>
<p>C’est que rien ne lutte avec tant d’opiniâtreté contre l’intérêt public que l’intérêt particulier ; c’est que rien ne résiste plus fortement à la raison que les abus invétérés ; c’est que la porte des compagnies ou communautés est fermée à la lumière générale qui fait longtemps d’inutiles efforts contre une barrière élevée pendant des siècles ; c’est que l’esprit des corps reste le même tandis que tout change autour d’eux ; c’est que de mauvais écoliers se changeant en mauvais maîtres, qui ne préparent dans leurs écoliers que des maîtres qui leur ressemblent, il s’établit une perpétuité d’ignorance traditionnelle et consacrée par de vieilles institutions ; tandis que les connaissances brillent de toutes parts, les ombres épaisses de l’ignorance continuent de couvrir ces asiles de la dispute bruyante et de l’inutilité.</p>
<p>Le temps des serfs n’est plus et la jurisprudence féodale est restée. La scolastique se maintient fièrement au centre de la Sorbonne. C’est la jurisprudence romaine qu’on professe dans nos écoles de droit. Tant il est important d’instituer les choses non pour le moment, mais pour toute la durée d’un empire.</p>

<head rend="uc center">Des temps de Charlemagne et d’Alfred.</head>
<p>Charlemagne en France, Alfred en Angleterre, ont fait à peu près ce qu’ils pouvaient faire de mieux. L’Europe entière était barbare. Il n’y avait ni sciences ni arts. Tout ce qui en avait existé autrefois était recelé dans des ouvrages anciens qu’on n’entendait pas. Dans ces circonstances, quel parti prendre ? Celui de s’occuper de la science des mots ou de l’étude des langues, clef de ces vieux sanctuaires fermés pendant tant de siècles. Mais depuis qu’on en a tiré ce qu’ils contenaient de richesses ; depuis que les arts et les sciences ont fait des progrès immenses ; que la science s’est mise à parler vulgairement, et que les idiomes anciens ne sont plus utiles qu’à quelques conditions particulières de la société, l’ordre et la nature de l’enseignement doivent être tout à fait différents ; et il serait bien singulier, pour ne rien dire de plus, qu’une école publique, une école où l’on recevrait indistinctement tous les sujets d’un empire, s’ouvrît par une étude, par une science qui ne conviendrait qu’à la moindre partie d’entre eux. A ces raisons j’en ajouterai beaucoup d’autres non moins péremptoires pour renvoyer la connaissance du grec et du latin presque à la fin du cours des études d’une université.</p>

<head rend="uc center">Position avantageuse de Sa Majesté Impériale.</head>
<p>Je me contenterai d’observer ici que le moment où Sa Majesté Impériale forme le projet d’une université est très-favorable. L’esprit humain semble avoir jeté sa gourme ; la futilité des études scolastiques est reconnue ; la fureur systématique est tombée ; il n’est plus question d’aristotélisme, ni de cartésianisme, ni de malebranchisme, ni de leibnitzianisme ; le goût de la vraie science règne de toutes parts ; les connaissances en tout genre ont été portées à un très-haut degré de perfection. Point de vieilles institutions qui s’opposent à ses vues ; elle a devant elle un champ vaste, un espace libre de tout obstacle sur lequel elle peut édifier à son gré. Je ne la flatte point, je parle avec sincérité, lorsque j’assure que, sous ce point de vue, sa position est plus avantageuse que la nôtre.</p>

<head rend="uc center">De l’ordre des études.</head>
<p>Après cette observation, je reviens à la comparaison que j’ai faite d’un cours de la science universelle à une grande avenue à l’entrée de laquelle il se présente une foule de sujets qui crient tous à la fois : « Instruction, instruction ! Nous ne savons rien ; qu’on nous apprenne. »</p>
<p>La première chose que je me dis à moi-même, c’est que tous ne sont ni capables ni destinés à suivre cette longue avenue jusqu’au bout.</p>
<p>Les uns iront jusqu’ici ; d’autres jusque-là ; quelques-uns un peu plus loin ; mais à mesure qu’ils avanceront, le nombre diminuera.</p>
<p>Quelle sera donc la première leçon que je leur donnerai ? la réponse n’est pas difficile. Celle qui leur convient à tous, quelle que soit la condition de la société qu’ils embrassent.</p>
<p>Quelle sera la seconde ? Celle qui, d’une utilité un peu moins générale, conviendra au nombre de ceux qui me resteront.</p>
<p>Et la troisième, celle qui, moins utile encore que la précédente, conviendra au nombre moins grand de ceux qui m’auront suivi jusqu’ici.</p>
<p>Et ainsi de suite jusqu’au bout de la carrière, l’utilité de l’enseignement diminuant à mesure que le nombre de mes auditeurs diminue.</p>
<p>Je classerai les sciences et les études, comme notre historien naturaliste, M. de Buffon, a classé les animaux, comme il eût classé les minéraux et les végétaux. Il a parlé d’abord du bœuf, l’animal qu’il nous importe le plus de bien connaître ; ensuite du cheval ; puis de l’âne, du mulet, du chien ; le loup, l’hyène, le tigre, la panthère, occupent d’après sa méthode un rang d’autant plus éloigné dans la science, qu’ils sont plus loin de nous dans la nature, et que nous en avons eu moins d’avantages à tirer ou moins de dommages à craindre.</p>
<p>Qu’en arrivera-t-il ? C’est que celui qui n’aura pas eu la force ou le courage de suivre la carrière de l’université jusqu’à la fin, plus tôt il l’abandonnera, et moins les connaissances qu’il laissera en arrière, plus celles qu’il emportera, lui étaient nécessaires.</p>

<p>J’insiste sur ce principe, il sera la pierre angulaire de l’édifice. Cette pierre mal assise, l’édifice s’écroule ; bien posée, l’édifice demeure inébranlable à jamais.</p>

<head rend="uc center">Connaissances essentielles et connaissances de convenance.</head>
<p>Il y a deux sortes de connaissances : les unes que j’appellerai essentielles ou primitives, les autres que j’appellerai secondaires ou de convenance. Les primitives sont de tous les états ; si on ne les acquiert pas dans la jeunesse, il faudra les acquérir dans un âge plus avancé, sous peine de se tromper ou d’appeler à tout moment un secours étranger.</p>
<p rend="left"> Les secondaires ne sont propres qu’à l’état qu’on a choisi.</p>
<p>Il y a cela d’avantageux que les connaissances primitives ne doivent être qu’élémentaires, et que les connaissances secondaires veulent être approfondies.</p>
<p>Les connaissances primitives approfondies donnent des connaissances d’état.</p>
<p>Tous les états n’exigent pas la même portion des connaissances primitives ou élémentaires qui forment la longue chaîne du cours complet des études d’une université. Il en faut moins à l’homme de peine ou journalier qu’au manufacturier, moins au manufacturier qu’au commerçant, moins au commerçant qu’au militaire, moins au militaire qu’au magistrat ou à l’ecclésiastique, moins à ceux-ci qu’à l’homme public.</p>
<p>Il importe donc qu’un élève ait plus ou moins suivi ce cours d’études, selon la profession à laquelle il se destinera. Par exemple, si un magistrat avait acquis toutes les connaissances primitives ou accessoires à son état, en suivant le cours de l’éducation publique jusqu’à sa fin, il renverrait moins fréquemment les affaires par devant des experts et jugerait plus sainement de la bonne ou mauvaise foi de ceux-ci.</p>
<p>Prenons un autre exemple moins important : le poëte. Quel est l’objet dans l’art ou dans la nature qui ne soit pas de son ressort ? Peut-on être un grand poëte et ignorer les langues anciennes et quelques-unes des langues modernes ? Peut-on être un grand poëte sans une forte teinture d’histoire, de physique et de géographie ? Peut-on être un grand poëte sans la <pb xml:id="PAG_00000448" n="444"/>connaissance des devoirs de l’homme et du citoyen, de tout ce qui tient aux lois des sociétés entre elles, aux religions, aux différents gouvernements, aux mœurs et aux usages des nations, à la société dont on est membre, aux passions, aux vices, aux vertus, aux caractères et à toute la morale ? Quelle érudition ne remarque-t-on pas dans Homère et Virgile ! Que n’avaient-ils pas étudié avant que d’écrire ? Nos poètes Corneille et Racine, moins instruits, n’auraient pas été ce qu’ils furent. Qu’est-ce ■qui distingue particulièrement Voltaire de tous nos jeunes littérateurs ? l’instruction. Voltaire sait beaucoup et nos jeunes poètes sont ignorants. L’ouvrage de Voltaire est plein de choses ; leurs ouvrages sont vides. Ils veulent chanter, ils ont du gosier ; mais, faute de connaissances, ils ne chantent que des fadaises mélodieuses.</p>
<p>La profession de poëte exige donc de longues études. La variété des connaissanees primitives qui lui sont nécessaires, suppose donc qu’il s’est avancé fort loin dans la carrière des écoles publiques. Le nombre des élèves s’éclaircissant à mesure que cette carrière se prolonge, il se trouve donc dans la classe la plus voisine de la fin et la plus diminuée, et tant mieux. J’en dis autant des orateurs, des érudits et des autres professions qui ne souffrent pas de médiocrité, et à qui l’instruction ne sert de rien sans le génie ; d’ailleurs peu nécessaires dans une société, même quand on y excelle.</p>
<p>Lorsqu’on place à la tête d’un cours d’études publiques la connaissance des langues anciennes, on annonce précisément le projet de peupler une nation de rhéteurs, de prêtres, de moines, de philosophes, de jurisconsultes et de médecins…</p>
<p>Plus de philosophes que de médecins, plus de médecins que d’hommes de loi, plus d’hommes de loi que d’orateurs, presque point de poëtes.</p>

<head rend="uc center">Objet d’une école publique.</head>
<p>L’objet d’une école publique n’est point de faire un homme profond en quelque genre que ce soit, mais de l’initier à un grand nombre de connaissances dont l’ignorance lui serait nuisible dans tous les états de la vie, et plus ou moins honteuse dans quelques-uns. L’ignorance des lois serait pernicieuse dans <pb xml:id="PAG_00000449" n="445"/>un magistrat. Il serait honteux qu’il se connût mal en véritable éloquence.</p>
<p>On entre ignorant à l’école, on en sort écolier ; on se fait maître soi-même en portant toute sa capacité naturelle et toute son application sur un objet particulier.</p>
<p>Que doit-on remporter d’une école publique ? De bons éléments.</p>

<p>Quoi ! le cours des études d’une université n’est qu’un enseignement progressif de connaissances élémentaires ?</p>

C’est que je suis géomètre. Vous parlez de chimie ? C’est que je suis chimiste. Vous parlez de métaphysique ? Et qui est-ce qui est métaphysicien comme moi ? Vice incurable : ne craignez point que celui qui possède les principes fondamentaux se rende ridicule. Il ne parlera point à contre-temps sans s’entendre lui-même et sans être entendu, si les connaissances élémentaires sont bien ordonnées dans sa tête. On n’est ni vain de ses petites lumières, ni décidé dans ses jugements, ni dogmatique, ni sceptique à l’aventure, quand on se doute de tout ce qui resterait à savoir pour affirmer ou nier, pour approuver ou contredire. On sait de l’arithmétique sans se piquer d’être arithméticien, de la géométrie sans s’arroger le titre de géomètre, de la chimie sans interrompre Rouelle ni Darcet<note xml:id="PAG_00000449-note1"> Diderot suivit assez longtemps les cours de Rouelle, auquel il a consacré une notice nécrologique de quelques lignes. Darcet, connu par l’alliage fusible qui porte son nom, était l’élève et l’ami de Rouelle.</note>. </item>

<p>Dans toute science ainsi que dans tout art il y a trois parties très-distinctes : l’érudition ou l’exposé de ses progrès, son <pb xml:id="PAG_00000450" n="446"/>histoire ; les principes spéculatifs avec la longue chaîne des conséquences qu’on en a déduites, sa théorie ; l’application de la science à l’usage, sa pratique.</p>
<p>L’érudition ou l’historique plus ou moins étendu appartient à tous. La science ou la somme des connaissances qui la constituent, et la pratique sont réservées aux gens du métier.</p>

<head rend="uc center">Différence de l’ordre des études dans un ouvrage ou dans une école.</head>
<p>La distribution de l’ordre des études dans une école n’est point du tout celle qui conviendrait dans un ouvrage scientifique.</p>
<p>L’écrivain se laissera conduire par le fil naturel qui enchaîne toutes les vérités, qui les lie dans son esprit et les amène sous sa plume ; mais sa méthode ne peut convenir à un enseignement public.</p>
<p>Ou il rapportera toute la connaissance humaine aux principales facultés de notre entendement, comme nous l’avons pratiqué dans <hi rend="i">l’Encyclopédie</hi>, rangeant tous les faits sous la mémoire ; toutes les sciences sous la raison ; tous les arts d’imitation sous l’imagination ; tous les arts mécaniques sous nos besoins ou sous nos plaisirs ; mais cette vue qui est vaste et grande, excellente dans une exposition générale de nos travaux, serait insensée si on l’appliquait aux leçons d’une école, où tout se réduirait à quatre professeurs et à quatre classes : un maître d’histoire, un maître de raison, une classe d’imitation, une autre de besoin. Ici l’on ne formerait que des historiens ou des philosophes ; là que des orateurs, ou des poëtes ou des ouvriers.</p>
<p>Il est encore deux points de vue sous lesquels on peut embrasser la science universelle, points de vue très-généraux, l’homme et la nature, l’homme seul et l’homme en société. Mais de l’une de ces divisions je vois éclore pêle-mêle des physiciens, des naturalistes, des médecins, des astronomes et des géomètres ; de l’autre, des historiens, des moralistes en vers et en prose, des jurisconsultes, des politiques ; la science de la robe, de l’épée et de l’église ; mais combien d’études préliminaires essentielles et communes à tous ces états !</p>
<p rend="left"> Que conclure de là ? Que, comme je l’ai insinué plus haut, <pb xml:id="PAG_00000451" n="447"/>la chose qui va bien dans la spéculation, va mal dans la pratique, et que l’ordre de l’enseignement prescrit par l’âge, par l’utilité plus ou moins générale des élèves, le seul qui soit praticable dans une éducation publique, est aussi le seul qui s’accorde avec l’intérêt général et particulier.</p>

<head rend="uc center">Objection et réponse.</head>
<p>Ce plan n’offre qu’une seule difficulté, c’est que la liaison d’une science avec celle qui la précède, son enchaînement naturel avec celle qui la suit et dont elle faciliterait l’enseignement, lui désigne une place, et que la raison d’utilité plus ou moins générale lui en fixe une autre.</p>
<p>Mais heureusement cette contradiction ne se présente qu’une fois ; encore la science que l’enseignement des connaissances amène dans un endroit d’où le motif d’utilité la transpose n’estelle pas d’une longue étude et ses éléments servent-ils de base à plusieurs conditions importantes. C’est le seul cas où nous nous soyons permis de nous écarter de notre principe général, la raison d’utilité.</p>
<p>Après ces observations théoriques sur lesquelles je ne me suis peut-être que trop étendu, je passe à l’exécution.</p>

<p>J’exposerai l’ordre selon lequel j’estime que les sciences devraient être enseignées dans une école publique. J’en donnerai le plan aussi vaste qu’il peut l’être ; je circonscrirai ce plan dans les limites ordinaires et d’usage ; je présenterai le tableau de l’un et de l’autre. Je reprendrai le plan réduit, classe par classe. J’appliquerai à chaque partie d’enseignement le principe d’utilité, et je finirai par quelques observations sur les écoles en général, la police, les maîtres, les élèves, les livres classiques, les exercices et les bâtiments.</p>

<p>Je suppose que son esprit n’est pas assez avancé, et que la porte de l’université ne lui sera pas encore ouverte, s’il n’est pas en état de saisir les premiers principes de l’arithmétique, de toutes les sciences la plus utile et la plus aisée.</p>
<p>Je suppose que ce n’est pas sur le nombre des années, mais sur les progrès de l’entendement qu’il faut admettre ou éloigner un enfant d’une école publique des sciences.</p>

Si ces talents qui distinguent le galant homme, l’homme du monde, du pédant et du moine, ont si peu d’importance à nos yeux qu’on ne les ait jamais fait entrer dans aucune institution publique, c’est sans doute une des suites du défaut invétéré de notre éducation monacale. Il y a près de neuf cents ans que nous ne voyons aux étudiants que la soutane et le froc.</p>
<p>Je supprime l’école de politique ou des affaires étrangères, quoiqu’elle ait bien ses connaissances préliminaires, parce qu’on doit les supposer aux secrétaires et conseillers d’ambassade qu’on envoie dans les cours étrangères où ils achèvent leur apprentissage.</p>
<p>Je supprime l’école de génie ou de l’art militaire, parce que S. M. Impériale a une école de cadets où je présume que la jeunesse destinée aux armes reçoit les instructions et pratique les exercices propres à cet état en attendant qu’elle aille se perfectionner dans les camps.</p>
<p>Je supprime l’école de marine, parce que de même qu’elle a ses cadets de terre elle a ses cadets de mer.</p>
<p>Je cède bien ridiculement à l’usage, et il faut que je sois étrangement subjugué par la routine pour supprimer l’école de l’agriculture et du commerce, les deux objets les plus importants de la société, l’art qui donne le pain, le vin, les aliments, qui fournit la matière première à toute industrie, à la consommation, aux échanges de citoyen à citoyen et aux échanges de société à société.</p>
<p>Toutes ces écoles supprimées sont plus ou moins nécessaires. Qu’elles fassent ou ne fassent point corps avec celles de l’université, un jour elles ne s’en établiront pas moins dans les villes de l’empire, mais isolées, mais sans être assujetties à aucune méthode raisonnée d’enseignement, ce qui n’en sera pas mieux.</p>

<p>Je viens de donner le plan d’une université telle que je la voudrais ; mais ensuite, réduisant ce plan pour le rendre praticable, je partage cette université en quatre facultés : 1° la faculté des arts ; 2° la faculté de médecine ; 3° la faculté de jurisprudence ; 4° la faculté de théologie. Ces trois dernières facultés ayant pour objet des sciences et des professions particulières, c’est dans la première, la faculté des arts, que se trouve compris l’ensemble des études applicables à la généralité de ceux qui étudient.</p>
<p>Cette faculté se divise en trois cours d’études à suivre parallèlement. Le premier cours, divisé en huit classes, comprend les sciences mathématiques, les sciences naturelles, les sciences logiques, les langues et la rhétorique.</p>
<p>Le second cours, divisé en deux classes, comprend les premiers principes de la métaphysique, la morale, la religion naturelle et révélée, l’histoire, la géographie, les premiers principes de la science économique.</p>
<p>Le troisième cours ne se compose que d’une classe où l’on enseigne le dessin et les principes de l’architecture.</p>

<head rend="uc center">I. Faculté des arts. <lb/>Premier cours d’études.</head>
<div>
<head rend="uc center">Première classe.</head>
<div>
<head rend="uc center">L’arithmétique, l’algèbre, le calcul des probabilités, la géométrie.</head>
<p>Je commence l’enseignement par l’arithmétique, l’algèbre et la géométrie, parce que, dans toutes les conditions de la vie, depuis la plus relevée jusqu’au dernier des arts mécaniques, on a besoin de ces connaissances. Tout se compte, tout se mesure. L’exercice de notre raison se réduit souvent à une règle de trois. Point d’objets plus généraux que le nombre et l’espace.</p>
<p>Savoir de la géométrie ou être géomètre sont deux choses très-diverses. Il est donné à peu d’hommes d’être géomètres ; il est donné à tous d’apprendre de l’arithmétique et de la <pb xml:id="PAG_00000457" n="453"/>géométrie. Il ne faut qu’un sens ordinaire ; et l’enfant de treize ans qui n’est pas capable de cette étude, n’est bon à rien ; il faut le renvoyer.</p>
<p>Je crois qu’il est plus aisé d’apprendre l’arithmétique et la géométrie élémentaire qu’à lire ; les lettres de l’alphabet ont fait verser aux enfants plus de larmes comme caractères de l’écriture, qu’elles ne leur en feront verser comme signes algébriques. .</p>
<p>Les enfants apprennent des jeux qui demandent plus de mémoire, de combinaison et de finesse que la géométrie.</p>
<p>L’usage journalier de la vie les a tous disposés, depuis le premier instant de leur naissance jusqu’au moment de leur entrée dans l’école, à l’arithmétique et à la géométrie. Ils n’ont cessé d’ajouter, de soustraire, de mesurer.</p>
<p>L’algèbre, dont le nom n’effraye plus, n’est qu’une arithmétique plus générale que celle des nombres, aussi claire et plus facile ; ce ne sont que les mêmes opérations, mais plus simples.</p>
<p>Les exemples d’enfants initiés à l’âge de quinze ou seize ans aux éléments de la géométrie transcendante et du calcul infinitésimal, ne sont point rares.</p>
<p>Je sors à l’instant de l’exercice d’un jeune homme appelé Guéneau de Montbéliard<note xml:id="PAG_00000457-note1"> Le fils du collaborateur de Buffon et de <hi rend="i">l’Encyclopédie</hi>. Il n’a pas fait davantage parler de lui.</note>, qui a soutenu au collège d’Harcourt une thèse sur les calculs intégral et différentiel ; ce jeune homme n’a pas encore seize ans, et il a été assujetti à tous les autres exercices du collège. Ce n’est que le fruit de son étude particulière.</p>
<p>M. D’Alembert assurera à Votre Majesté Impériale en avoir entendu, il y a quelque temps, un autre du même âge répondre publiquement et pertinemment à tout ce qu’il est possible de savoir aujourd’hui dans la science mathématique.</p>
<p>On lui en a présenté un troisième qui n’avait pas plus de dix ans, qui s’était accoutumé de lui-même à exécuter de tête les calculs arithmétiques les plus effrayants. D’Alembert lui demanda combien il y avait de secondes dans une année ; tandis que l’enfant rêvait à la question, D’Alembert la résolvait la plume à la main. L’enfant eut aussitôt fait que lui, avec cette <pb xml:id="PAG_00000458" n="454"/>différence que le grand géomètre ne compta que l’année commune, et que l’enfant avait calculé cette année et l’année bissextile<note xml:id="PAG_00000458-note1"> On a, de temps à autre, des exemples de semblables phénomènes. Tel fut, il y a une trentaine d’années, le jeune pâtre Mondheux. Qu’est-il devenu ?</note>. Je crois qu’il s’est chargé de l’éducation de cet enfant qui ne s’est montré dans le reste qu’un sujet ordinaire.</p>
<p>Pascal avait trouvé un certain nombre de propositions d’Euclide à l’âge où l’on appelle un cercle un <hi rend="i">rond</hi>, une ligne une <hi rend="i">barre</hi> ; et pourquoi un autre enfant n’entendrait-il pas ce que Pascal inventa ?</p>
<p>Un enfant ne peut guère entrer trop jeune dans les petites écoles. Il n’en est pas ainsi des écoles de l’université où il restera plus ou moins de temps, selon sa capacité naturelle et ses progrès.</p>
<p>On ne peut commencer trop tôt à rectifier l’esprit de l’homme, en le meublant de modèles de raisonnement de la première évidence et de la vérité la plus rigoureuse. C’est à ces modèles que l’enfant comparera dans la suite tous ceux qu’on lui fera, et dont il aura à apprécier la force ou la faiblesse, en quelque matière que ce soit.</p>
<p>C’est surtout en mathématiques que toutes les vérités sont identiques ; toute la science du calcul n’est que la répétition de cet axiome, un et un font deux ; et toute la géométrie n’est que la répétition de celui-ci, le tout est plus grand que sa partie.</p>
<p>La géométrie est la meilleure et la plus simple de toutes les logiques, la plus propre à donner de l’inflexibilité au jugement et à la raison.</p>
<p>C’est la lime sourde de tous les préjugés populaires, de quelque espèce qu’ils soient. Si le profond géomètre Euler est resté une bonne vieille femme, c’est un cas aussi extraordinaire que celui de Pascal.</p>
<p>Un peuple, est-il ignorant et superstitieux ? apprenez aux enfants de la géométrie et vous verrez avec le temps l’effet de cette science.</p>
<p>Le premier chez les Anciens qui démontra par quelques règles de trigonométrie que la lune ou Diane était plus grande que le Péloponèse, fit grincer les dents aux prêtres du paganisme.</p>

<p>Newton disait que le socinianisme ou la doctrine des unitaires lui semblait plus géométrique.</p>
<p>Si l’on croit que l’étude des mathématiques dessèche le cœur et l’esprit, cela ne peut être vrai que d’une étude habituelle ; encore cela est-il vrai ?</p>
<p>Si l’on croit que la méthode des géomètres n’est pas applicable à tout, on se trompe ; si l’on prétend qu’il ne faut pas l’appliquer à tout, on a raison. Chaque sujet a sa manière d’être traité ; la méthode géométrique serait trop sèche pour les matières d’agrément, et nos langues sont trop imparfaites pour s’y prêter, les acceptions des mots trop vagues, trop indéterminées pour comporter cette rigueur. Mais si l’on doit souvent se dispenser de l’employer, il ne faut jamais la perdre de vue ; c’est la boussole d’un bon esprit, c’est le frein de l’imagination<note xml:id="PAG_00000459-note1"> Voir le chapitre de Pascal : <hi rend="i">De l’esprit géométrique</hi>, dans les <hi rend="i">Pensées</hi>.</note>.</p>
<p>En quelque matière que ce soit, si l’on a porté la conviction jusqu’à un certain point, on s’écrie : Cela est démontré géométriquement. Il ne s’agit pourtant pas de géométrie.</p>
<p>L’étude de la géométrie conduit imperceptiblement à l’esprit d’invention.</p>
<p>Si nos dictionnaires étaient bien faits ou, ce qui revient au même, si les mots usuels étaient aussi bien définis que les mots <hi rend="i">angles</hi> et <hi rend="i">carrés</hi>, il resterait peu d’erreurs et de disputes entre les hommes. C’est à ce point de perfection que tout travail sur la langue doit tendre.</p>
<p>Rien de ce qui est obscur ne peut satisfaire une tête géométrique ; le désordre des idées lui déplaît et l’inconséquence la blesse.</p>
<p>Si l’on a souvent reproché au géomètre d’avoir l’esprit faux, c’est que, tout entier à son étude, les choses de la vie lui sont inconnues<note xml:id="PAG_00000459-note2">
<p>« Communément, les géomètres, loin d’être des génies, ne sont pas même des gens d’esprit. Ce que j’attribue au petit nombre d’idées qui les absorbent et bornent l’esprit au lieu de l’étendre, comme on l’imagine. » LA METTRIE, <hi rend="i">Histoire naturelle de l’âme</hi>.</p>
<p>« La géométrie ne redresse que les esprits droits », répondait l’abbé Terrasson à un qui l’avait faux et apprenait la géométrie pour apprendre à raisonner juste. » (Le même, <hi rend="i">Supplément à l’ouvrage de Pénélope.)</hi> — Par antithèse, un des professeurs de D’Alembert lui interdit la poésie, « parce que, disait-il (et il avait raison dans un certain sens), la poésie dessèche le cœur. »</p>

<p>Tous les raisonnements du géomètre finissent par ces mots : <hi rend="i">ce qu’il fallait démontrer</hi>. Tous les raisonnements qu’on fait soit en discourant, soit en écrivant, devraient finir par la même formule ; mais, tout étant égal d’ailleurs, celui qui ne l’a jamais employée à faux sera le vrai juge du droit qu’on a de s’en servir.</p>
<p>J’ai ajouté à l’arithmétique, à l’algèbre et à la géométrie la science, des combinaisons ou le calcul des probabilités, parce que tout se combine et que, hors des mathématiques, le reste n’est que probabilité ; que cette partie de l’enseignement estd’un usage immense dans les affaires de la vie ; qu’elle embrasse et les choses les plus graves et les choses les plus frivoles ; qu’elle s’étend à nos vues d’ambition, à nos projets de fortune et de gloire, et à nos amusements, et que les éléments n’en sont pas plus difficiles que ceux de l’arithmétique.</p>
<p>Il y a un petit traité d’Huygens<note xml:id="PAG_00000460-note1"> Traduit en latin par Schooten, sous ce titre : <hi rend="i">De ratiociniis in ludo aleæ</hi>.</note> qu’on pourrait rendre encore plus clair et plus simple. Il ne faudrait pas manquer d’en faire l’application aux jeux de hasard. Par une sorte de vanité qui n’est pas la moins insensée, l’homme met souvent à ses jeux, à la Plus dangereuse et la plus frivole de ses occupations, plus d’importance qu’à ses affaires d’intérêt. Cet essai d’analyse piquerait singulièrement la curiosité des enfants.</p>
<p>La science des probabilités a lieu jusque dans les matières de législation. On peut demander, par exemple, quelle est la durée de l’absence après laquelle un citoyen peut être censé mort civilement.</p>
<p>C’est elle qui règle tout ce qui appartient aux assurances, aux tontines, aux loteries, aux rentes constituées sur une ou plusieurs têtes, à la plupart des objets de finance et de commerce.</p>
<p>C’est elle qui indique le parti le plus sûr ou le moins incertain, et qui console lorsque l’événement ne répond pas à une attente bien fondée.</p>
<p>Toute notre vie n’est qu’un jeu de hasard ; tâchons d’avoir la chance pour nous.</p>

<p>Les lois du mouvement et de la chute des corps, perpendiculaire ou oblique, sont des connaissances préliminaires de la mécanique, science de première utilité. Il n’y a pas un seul art qui n’en sente la nécessité. Nous ne faisons pas un pas dans la société, dans les rues, à la ville, à la campagne, sans y rencontrer des machines.</p>
<p>Le traité de l’équilibre et du mouvement des fluides a des applications immenses.</p>

<p>On n’entreprend rien de grand et de petit sans les connaissances de l’hydraulique qui dirigent les canaux, les pompes, les aqueducs, les moulins, etc.</p>
<p>L’art d’employer l’air, l’eau, la terre ou la pesanteur et le feu, est l’art d’épargner le temps et les bras de l’homme qui en fait ses domestiques. Ce sont quatre esclaves du Hollandais.</p>
<p>Ici la liaison des sciences et leur utilité concourent à fixer le rang que j’ai donné à la mécanique et à l’hydraulique, après l’arithmétique, l’algèbre et la géométrie.</p>

<p>L’homme de mer ne peut se passer des connaissances qui précèdent, et moins encore de celles-ci. Elles sont essentielles aux géographes par état. Le voyageur en doit être plus ou moins instruit.</p>
<p>Il serait honteux pour un homme élevé de ne rien savoir ni du globe sur lequel il marche, ni de la voûte sous laquelle il se promène.</p>
<p>Si le Créateur n’a marqué plus fortement nulle part la grandeur de sa puissance que dans l’ordonnance des cieux, l’homme n’a marqué nulle part plus fortement l’étendue de son esprit que dans les progrès de l’astronomie.</p>
<p>Rien de plus simple et de plus ingénieux que l’art de construire des cadrans, de tracer une méridienne, d’élever un gnomon, de construire des globes et des sphères ; des planisphères qui indiquent à chaque instant l’état du ciel, l’œuvre principale du Créateur, imité et réduit par la créature dans un espace de quelques pieds.</p>
<p>J’avouerai toutefois que je pourrais bien avoir oublié ici la raison de l’utilité plus ou moins générale, pour céder à la liaison des connaissances.</p>
<p>Les études de cette classe sont purement géométriques. Les élèves ont appris tout ce qu’il faut pour s’y appliquer. Le temps qu’ils y emploieront ne sera pas long, c’est l’affaire de quelques mois.</p>

<p>D’ailleurs, il y a deux remèdes ; l’un de faire passer tout de suite un certain nombre d’élèves de la seconde classe à la quatrième ; l’autre de détacher ces études du premier cours, et de les renvoyer au second, qui se fait en même temps, marcher sur la même ligne, et où elles se lieront très-bien à la géographie et à la chronologie. Cependant j’incline à les laisser où je les ai placées.</p>

<head rend="uc center">L’histoire naturelle, la physique expérimentale.</head>
<p>Rien de plus utile et de plus intéressant que l’histoire naturelle, point de science plus faite pour les enfants ; c’est un exercice continu des yeux, de l’odorat, du goût et de la mémoire.</p>
<p>Entre les conditions subalternes de la société, il n’y en a point à laquelle l’histoire naturelle ne fût plus ou moins utile ; tout ce qu’on voit, tout ce qu’on touche, tout ce qu’on emploie, tout ce qu’on vend, tout ce qu’on achète, est tiré des animaux, des minéraux ou des végétaux.</p>
<p>C’est le catalogue des richesses que la nature a destinées à nos besoins et à nos fantaisies. Les animaux nous servent ou nous nuisent, et ils sont bons à connaître et pour les avantages que nous en retirons, et pour les dommages que nous en avons à craindre. Les minéraux et les métaux sont employés dans tous nos ateliers ; ils nous défendent sous la forme d’armes, ils abrègent nos travaux comme instruments, ils nous sont commodes comme ustensiles. Les végétaux nous alimentent ou nous récréent.</p>
<p>C’est en étudiant l’histoire naturelle que les élèves apprendront à se servir de leurs sens, art sans lequel ils ignoreront beaucoup de choses, et ce qui est pis, ils en sauront mal beaucoup d’autres : art de bien employer les seuls moyens que nous ayons de connaître ; art dont on pourrait faire d’excellents éléments, préliminaires de toute espèce d’enseignement.</p>
<p>La physique expérimentale est une imitation en petit des grands phénomènes de la nature, un essai de ses principaux agents, l’air, l’eau, la terre, le feu, la lumière, les solides, les fluides, le mouvement. Point de mécanique sans géométrie, point de physique expérimentale sans quelque teinture de mécanique.</p>
<p>La physique expérimentale s’introduit encore dans presque tous les ateliers des artistes. L’étude en est utile, agréable et facile. Point de machines sans calcul de la solidité et de la <pb xml:id="PAG_00000466" n="462"/>fragilité, de la pesanteur et de la légèreté, de la mollesse et de la dureté, de la raideur et de la flexibilité, de l’humidité et de la sécheresse, du frottement et de l’élasticité. Les élèves verront les phénomènes, mais ils en ignoreront la raison sans les connaissances préliminaires des deux premières classes.</p>

<head rend="uc center">Livres classiques de la quatrième classe.</head>
<p>(L’histoire naturelle.) Les institutions d’histoire naturelle sont à faire ; il faudrait en donner la tâche à M. D’Aubenton, garde du cabinet d’histoire naturelle du roi.</p>
<p>Les <hi rend="i">Dictionnaires</hi> de Bomare<note xml:id="PAG_00000466-note1"> Le <hi rend="i">Dictionnaire d’Histoire naturelle</hi> de Valmont do Bomare a eu un grand succès et do nombreuses éditions.</note> sont peu de chose. Rien n’est plus contraire à l’ordre d’enseignement que l’ordre alphabétique ; rien ne s’y assujettit moins que l’histoire naturelle, qui a toujours été l’asile des méthodes. On n’étudie pas dans un dictionnaire, on le consulte. Jusqu’à ce qu’on ait mieux, les livres de Bomare ne sont pas à dédaigner.</p>
<p>Il y a un petit <hi rend="i">traité de l’art de transporter au loin et de conserver dans le cabinet des pièces d’histoire naturelle</hi>, par M. Turgot, le frère du contrôleur général actuel<note xml:id="PAG_00000466-note2"> Ceci semble démontrer que Diderot écrivait en 1774-75.</note>.</p>
<p>L’Abrégé de <hi rend="i">l’Histoire naturelle</hi> fait par l’auteur même, M. de Buffon, est encore trop long pour les écoles.</p>
<p>Les deux <hi rend="i">Dictionnaires</hi> de Lemery<note xml:id="PAG_00000466-note3">

<head rend="uc center">La chimie, l’anatomie.</head>
<p>L’histoire naturelle introduit à la chimie, de même que la physique expérimentale, la mécanique et l’hydraulique, à l’étude du corps humain, la plus belle des machines, ainsi que la plus essentielle à connaître pour nous, dont elle est une bonne portion.</p>
<p>Le chimiste Becker a dit que les physiciens n’étaient que des animaux stupides qui léchaient la surface des corps, et ce dédain n’est pas tout à fait mal fondé. Rien n’est simple dans la nature, la chimie analyse, compose, décompose ; c’est la rivale du grand ouvrier. <hi rend="sup">L’athanor</hi><note xml:id="PAG_00000467-note1"> Appareil employé surtout par les alchimistes. Le feu, toujours entretenu, devait produire une circulation incessante de la matière en expérience.</note> du laboratoire est une image fidèle de l’athanor universel. C’est dans le laboratoire que sont contrefaits l’éclair, le tonnerre, la cristallisation des pierres précieuses et des pierres communes, la formation des métaux, et tous les phénomènes qui se passent autour de nous, sous nos pieds, au-dessus de nos têtes.</p>
<p rend="left"> Quel est l’art mécanique où la science du chimiste n’entre pas ?</p>
<p>L’agriculteur, le métallurgiste, le pharmacien, le médecin, l’orfèvre, le monnayeur, etc., peuvent-ils s’en passer ?</p>
<p>S’il n’y avait que trois sciences à apprendre, et que le choix s’en fît pour nos besoins, ils préféreraient la mécanique, l’histoire naturelle et la chimie.</p>
<p>Les arts mécaniques sont stationnaires par l’ignorance des ouvriers ; ils dégénèrent par leur intérêt mal entendu.</p>

<p>(La chimie.) Il y a des éléments de chimie sans nombre ; il y en a en français, il y en a en allemand.</p>

<p>Mais ce qu’il y aurait de mieux à faire, ce serait de se procurer les cahiers de Rouelle revus, corrigés et augmentés par son frère et le docteur Darcet, et de leur enjoindre de faire l’application des principes aux phénomènes de la nature et à la pratique des ateliers, moyens de perfectionner la physique et d’éclairer les arts mécaniques.</p>
<p>(L’anatomie.) Il y a une petite <hi rend="i">Analomie</hi> fort courte par Kulm. Il y a mieux, c’est <hi rend="i">l’Anatomie</hi> d’IIeister, traduite, commentée et amplifiée par Senac<note xml:id="PAG_00000468-note1"> 1735 et 1753.</note>.</p>
<p>Pour les maîtres la grande <hi rend="i">Physiologie de Haller :</hi> pour les élèves ses premiers <hi rend="i">Linéaments de physiologie</hi><note xml:id="PAG_00000468-note2">
<hi rend="i">Primæ lineæ physiologiæ</hi>, traduites par Tarin. 1752 ou 1761, et par Bordenave, 1709.</note>.</p>
<p>Ici on est trop riche et trop pauvre ; trop riche en traités, trop pauvre en bons abrégés ; les traités sont trop étendus, les abrégés sont mal faits.</p>
<p>Le professeur en anatomie et physiologie serait obligé de finir son cours par quelques leçons sur l’art de fortifier le corps et de conserver sa santé, et de ne pas oublier la longue liste de souffrances que l’homme intempérant se prépare.</p>
<p>Et puisque l’idée qui suit se présente à ma pensée, il vaut encore mieux que je l’indique que de l’omettre.</p>
<p>Je désirerais que le professeur, en quelque genre que ce fût, terminât son cours par un abrégé historique de la science, depuis son origine jusqu’à l’endroit où il aura laissé les élèves. Poussé plus loin, ils ne l’entendraient pas.</p>

<head rend="uc center">La logique et la critique, la grammaire générale et raisonnée.</head>
<p>La logique est l’art de penser juste, ou de faire un usage légitime de ses sens et de sa raison, de s’assurer de la vérité des connaissances qu’on a reçues, de bien conduire son esprit dans la recherche de la vérité, et de démêler les erreurs de l’ignorance ou les sophismes de l’intérêt et des passions : art sans lequel toutes les connaissances sont peut-être plus nuisibles qu’utiles à l’homme, qui en devient ridicule, sot ou méchant.</p>

<p>C’est assurément par la logique qu’il faudrait commencer, c’est-à-dire par la perfection de l’instrument dont on doit se servir, si cet enseignement abstrait était à la portée des enfants ; mais ; parvenus jusqu’ici, ils y auront été préparés par un suffisant exercice de leur raison.</p>
<p>La critique-est l’art d’apprécier les différentes autorités, assez souvent contradictoires, sur lesquelles nos connaissances sont appuyées. .</p>
<p rend="left"> Il y a l’autorité des sens et celle de la raison.</p>
<p rend="left"> L’autorité de l’expérience et celle de l’observation.</p>
<p rend="left"> Le danger de l’analogie.</p>
<p>L’examen des témoins ; le témoin oculaire, l’historien contemporain, l’historien moderne de faits anciens, les écrivains en tout genre, les philosophes, les orateurs, les poètes, les nations, la tradition.</p>
<p rend="left"> L’examen des faits naturels ou prodigieux.</p>
<p>Le traité de la probabilité, de l’existence, de l’évidence, de la vraisemblance, de la certitude, de la persuasion, de la conviction, du doute.</p>
<p>L’examen des opinions et des systèmes… En un mot le traité des lieux philosophiques (<hi rend="i">Loci philosophici)</hi> comme le théologien Melchior Canus a fait le traité des <hi rend="i">Lieux théologiques</hi>. Ouvrage de la plus grande importance dont il n’y a pas encore la première page d’écrite.</p>
<p>Les éléments de la logique et de la critique conduisent à l’étude de l’histoire et des belles-lettres ; et la grammaire générale raisonnée est l’introduction à l’étude de toutes les langues particulières.</p>
<p>Quelque variété apparente qu’il y ait entre les langues, si l’on examine leur objet d’être la contre-épreuve de tout ce qui se passe dans l’entendement humain, on s’apercevra bientôt que c’est une même machine soumise à des règles générales, à quelques différences près, de pure convention, dont une langue par gestes trouverait les équivalents.</p>
<p>Le traité de ces règles générales s’appelle grammaire générale raisonnée ; celui qui la possède a la clef des autres, et il est prêt à étudier avec intelligence, et à apprendre avec rapidité, quelque langue particulière que ce soit.</p>
<p>J’ai placé cette étude après la logique, qui s’occupe des <pb xml:id="PAG_00000470" n="466"/>mots, de leurs acceptions, de leur ordre dans la proposition, et de l’ordre de la proposition dans le raisonnement, parce que la grammaire générale raisonnée n’est qu’une application trèssubtile de la logique, ou de l’art de penser, à la grammaire ou à l’art de parler. »</p>

<p>Mais surtout le petit livre de <hi rend="i">l’Entendement</hi> ou de la <hi rend="i">Nature humaine</hi>, par Hobbes<note xml:id="PAG_00000470-note2"> Traduit par d’Holbach.</note>, ouvrage court et profond, antérieur à tous les auteurs que j’ai cités, et qui ont délayé ses lignes substantielles en une multitude de pages exsangues. C’est un chef-d’œuvre de logique et de raison.</p>
<p>(La critique.) Il y a l’ouvrage de Le Clerc<note xml:id="PAG_00000470-note3"> Jean Leclerc : <hi rend="i">Ars critica, etc</hi>. 1699, 1712 ou 1730. 3 vol. in-8°.</note>, je n’en connais point d’autres.</p>
<p>(La grammaire générale raisonnée.) C’est un ouvrage à faire. Elle suppose une érudition profonde, une dialectique peu commune, un maître versé dans presque toutes les langues connues, un Gebelin<note xml:id="PAG_00000470-note4"> Court de Gebelin, l’auteur du <hi rend="i">Monde primitif</hi>, qui est une grammaire universelle.</note> ou quelque autre.</p>
<p>Celle de Port-Royal n’est qu’un essai superficiel, elle peut toutefois servir de modèle et de guide, la bonne édition est celle de feu M. Duclos<note xml:id="PAG_00000470-note5"> Édition avec <hi rend="i">remarques sur la Grammaire générale de Port-Royal</hi>. 1754, in-12.</note>, secrétaire de l’Académie française.</p>
<p>Les <hi rend="i">Tropes</hi> de Dumarsais, quoique restreints à notre langue, sont remplis d’excellentes observations communes à toutes.</p>
<p>L’ouvrage de M. le président de Brosses sur <hi rend="i">l’Origine et la formation des Langues</hi><note xml:id="PAG_00000470-note6">
<hi rend="i">Traité de la formation mécanique des langues et des principes physiques de l’Étymologie</hi>. 1765,2 vol. in-12.</note> est d’un excellent esprit.</p>

<p>J’en dirais autant de la <hi rend="i">Grammaire française</hi> de Beauzée si l’auteur avait eu plus de clarté dans le discours et plus de goût dans le choix des exemples.</p>
<p>Il y a la <hi rend="i">Grammaire</hi> de l’abbé Girard<note xml:id="PAG_00000471-note1">
<hi rend="i">Les Vrais Principes de la langue française</hi>. 1747, 2 vol. in-12.</note>, parsemée alternativement de pages d’un précieux qui fait rire et de pages d’une fermeté de style et de raison qui surprend ; on croirait que l’ouvrage est de deux mains.</p>
<p>Ses <hi rend="i">Synonymes</hi><note xml:id="PAG_00000471-note2"> Dont Voltaire disait qu’ils subsisteraient tant que la langue française durerait.</note> sont un petit chef-d’œuvre original de finesse, de bon goût et de morale.</p>
<p>Si l’on jugeait à propos de reléguer la grammaire générale raisonnée après l’étude des grammaires et des langues particulières, ou du moins jusqu’au moment où les élèves posséderaient une langue étrangère ancienne ou moderne, avec laquelle ils pourraient comparer la syntaxe de la leur, je ne m’y opposerais pas ; la méthode qui remonte des faits particuliers aux premiers principes, est peut-être à préférer ici à la méthode qui descend des premiers principes aux cas particuliers.</p>
<p>Mais lorsque je considère qu’il ne s’agit point d’un objet entièrement nouveau, que nous possédons tous une langue maternelle, que le long exercice de la parole nous dispose dès notre enfance à l’étude de ces principes, ou à leur application à l’idiome qui nous est familier, et dont nous avons appris les éléments de nos parents, lorsqu’ils environnaient notre berceau, ou qu’ils nous portaient dans leurs bras ; lorsque je vois la liaison étroite de cette science avec la logique, je la laisse où je l’ai placée.</p>

<head rend="uc center">Septième classe.</head>
<head rend="uc center">La langue russe et la langue slavonne par principes.</head>
<p>A l’étude de la grammaire générale raisonnée je fais succéder celle de la langue de son pays, car s’il faut écrire et parler correctement une langue c’est la sienne. Je ne dirai rien sur ces deux langues qui me sont inconnues, pas davantage sur les livres classiques, les grammaires et les dictionnaires.</p>
<p rend="left"> Je remarquerai seulement que chez toutes les nations, la <pb xml:id="PAG_00000472" n="468"/>langue a dû ses progrès aux premiers génies ; c’était le résultat des efforts qu’ils faisaient pour rendre fortement et clairement leurs pensées. C’est Rabelais, Marot, Malherbe, Pascal et Racine qui ont conduit celle que nous parlons au point où elle est.</p>
<p>Si la précision et la clarté sont les deux qualités principales d’une langue, toutes doivent prendre pour modèle la langue française ; si c’est l’énergie, c’est autre chose.</p>
<p>Presque point de milieu dans un ouvrage français, il est bien, très-bien ou très-mal écrit. Souvent la beauté ou la nouveauté des idées couvre les vices du style.</p>
<p>Personne n’est plus en état de remplir ce paragraphe que Sa Majesté Impériale ; elle s’inscrira quand il lui plaira parmi les protecteurs de la langue russe.</p>

<head rend="uc center">Huitième classe.</head>
<head rend="uc center">Le grec et le latin, l’éloquence et la poésie <lb/>ou l’étude des belles-lettres.</head>
<p>La gloire littéraire est le fondement de toutes les autres : les grandes actions tombent dans l’oubli ou dégénèrent en fables extravagantes, sans un historien fidèle qui les raconte, un grand orateur qui les préconise, un poète sacré qui les chante, ou des arts plastiques qui les représentent à nos yeux. Personne n’est donc plus intéressé à la naissance, aux progrès et à la durée des beaux-arts, que les bons souverains.</p>
<p>Ce sont les lettres et les monuments qui marquent les intervalles des siècles qui se projetteraient les uns sur les autres, et ne formeraient qu’une nuit épaisse à travers laquelle l’avenir n’apercevrait plus que des fantômes exagérés, sans les écrits des savants qui distinguent les années par le récit des actions qui s’y sont faites. Le passé n’existe que par eux ; leur silence replonge l’univers dans le néant ; la mémoire des aïeux n’est pas ; leurs vertus restent sans honneur et sans fruit pour les neveux, le moment où ces cygnes paraissent est comme l’époque de la création.</p>
<p>Cependant il y a bien de la différence entre celui qui agit et celui qui parle, entre le héros et celui qui le chante : si le premier n’avait pas été, l’autre n’aurait rien à dire. <p>Les beaux-arts ne font pas les bonnes mœurs ; ils n’en sont que le vernis.</p>
<p>Il faut qu’il y ait des orateurs, des poètes, des philosophes, de grands artistes ; mais, enfants du génie bien plus que de l’enseignement, le nombre n’en doit et n’en peut être que fort petit. Il importe surtout qu’ils soient excellents moralistes, condition sans laquelle ils deviendront des corrupteurs dangereux. Ils préconiseront le vice éclatant, et laisseront le mérite obscur dans son oubli. Adulateurs des grands, ils altéreront, par leurs éloges mal placés, toute idée de vertu : plus ils seront séduisants, plus on les lira, plus ils feront de mal.</p>
<p>Voilà une des raisons pour lesquelles je relègue l’étude des belles-lettres dans un rang fort éloigné. J’en vais exposer beaucoup d’autres : je m’élève contre un ordre d’enseignement consacré par l’usage de tous les siècles et de toutes les nations, et j’espère qu’on me permettra d’être un peu moins superficiel sur ce sujet.</p>

<p>Voici les raisons de ceux qui s’obstinent à placer l’étude du grec et du latin à la tête de toute éducation publique ou particulière.</p>
<p>1° Il faut, disent-ils, appliquer à la science des mots l’âge où l’on a beaucoup de mémoire et peu de jugement.</p>
<p>2° Si l’étude des langues exige beaucoup de mémoire, elle l’étend encore en l’exerçant.</p>
<p>3° Les enfants ne sont guère capables d’une autre occupation.</p>

<p>À cela je réponds qu’on peut exercer et étendre la mémoire des enfants aussi facilement et plus utilement avec d’autres connaissances que des mots grecs et latins ; qu’il faut autant de <pb xml:id="PAG_00000474" n="470"/>mémoire pour apprendre exactement la chronologie, la géographie et l’histoire, que le dictionnaire et la syntaxe ; que les exemples d’hommes qui n’ont jamais su ni grec ni latin, et dont la mémoire n’en est ni moins fidèle, ni moins étendue, ne sont pas rares ; qu’il est faux qu’on ne puisse tirer parti que de la mémoire des enfants ; qu’ils ont plus de raison que n’en exigent des éléments d’arithmétique, de géométrie et d’histoire ; qu’il est d’expérience qu’ils retiennent tout indistinctement ; que quand ils n’auraient pas cette dose de raison qui convient aux sciences que je viens de nommer, ce n’est point à l’étude des langues qu’il faudrait accorder la préférence, à moins qu’on ne se proposât de les enseigner comme on apprend la langue maternelle, par usage, par un exercice journalier, méthode très avantageuse sans cloute, mais impraticable dans un enseignement public, dans une école mêlée de commensaux et d’externes ; que l’enseignement des langues se fait par des rudiments et d’autres livres ; c’est-à-dire qu’elle y est montrée par principes raisonnes, et que je ne connais pas de science plus épineuse ; que c’est l’application continuelle d’une logique très-fine, d’une métaphysique subtile, que je ne crois pas seulement supérieure à la capacité de l’enfance, mais encore à l’intelligence de la généralité des hommes faits, et la preuve en est consignée dans <hi rend="i">l’Encyclopédie</hi>, à l’article CONSTRUCTION, du célèbre Dumarsais, et à tous les articles de grammaire ; que si les langues sont des connaissances instrumentales, ce n’est pas pour les élèves, mais pour les maîtres ; que c’est mettre à la main d’un apprenti forgeron un marteau dont il ne peut ni empoigner le manche, ni vaincre le poids ; que si ce sont des clefs, ces clefs sont trèsdifficiles à saisir, très-dures à tourner ; qu’elles ne sont à l’usage que d’un très-petit nombre de conditions ; qu’à consulter l’expérience et à interroger les meilleurs étudiants de nos classes, on trouvera que l’étude s’en fait mal dans la jeunesse ; qu’elle excède de fatigue et d’ennui ; qu’elle occupe cinq ou six années, au bout desquelles on n’en entend pas seulement les mots techniques ; que les définitions rigoureuses des termes génitif, ablatif, verbes personnels, impersonnels sont peut-être encore à faire ; que la théorie précise des temps des verbes ne le cède guère en difficulté aux propositions de la philosophie de Newton, et je demande qu’on en fasse l’essai dans <hi rend="i">l’Encyclopédie</hi>, <pb xml:id="PAG_00000475" n="471"/>où ce sujet est supérieurement traité à l’article TEMPS ; que les jeunes étudiants ne savent ni le grec ni le latin qu’on leur a si longtemps enseigné, ni les sciences auxquelles on les aurait initiés ; que les plus habiles sont forcés à les réétudier au sortir de l’école, sous peine de les ignorer toute leur vie, et que la peine qu’ils ont endurée en expliquant Virgile, les pleurs dont ils ont trempé les satires plaisantes d’Horace, les ont à tel point dégoûtés de ces auteurs qu’ils ne les regardent plus qu’en frémissant : d’où je puis conclure, ce me semble, que ces langues savantes propres à si peu, si difficiles pour tous, doivent être renvoyées à un temps où l’esprit soit mûr, et placées dans un ordre d’enseignement postérieur à celui d’un grand nombre de connaissances plus généralement utiles et plus aisées, et avec d’autant plus de raison qu’à dix-huit ans on y fait des progrès plus sûrs et plus rapides, et qu’on en sait plus et mieux dans un an et demi, qu’un enfant n’en peut apprendre en six ou sept ans. Mais accordons qu’au sortir des écoles, les enfants possèdent les langues anciennes qu’on leur a montrées : que deviennent ces enfants ? Ils se répandent dans les différentes professions de la société : les uns se font commerçants ou militaires, d’autres suivent la cour ou le barreau ; c’està-dire que les dix-neuf vingtièmes passent leur vie sans lire un auteur latin, et oublient ce qu’ils ont si péniblement appris.</p>
<p>Mais ce n’est pas tout : si les principes de la grammaire ne sont aucunement à la portée des enfants, ils ne sont guère plus en état de saisir le fond des choses contenues dans les ouvrages sur lesquels on lès exerce.</p>
<p>Je renvoie sur ce point à l’endroit où j’esquisserai le caractère des auteurs grecs et latins.</p>
<p>Je sais qu’on a recours à la glose interlinéaire, à la construction directe, et à d’autres petits moyens de soulager l’imbécillité des élèves ; mais j’ignore encore le fruit de ces méthodes tant prônées par les inventeurs ; et le préservatif des mœurs, à l’aide des éditions mutilées, me paraît insuffisant, si à chaque ligne le maître ne fait pas sentir le vice d’un caractère, le danger d’une maxime, l’atrocité ou la malhonnêteté d’une action, peine qu’il ne se donnera jamais. Si l’étude des anciens auteurs était réservée pour un temps où la tête fût mûre, et les élèves avancés dans la connaissance de l’histoire, <pb xml:id="PAG_00000476" n="472"/>il me semble qu’ils y rencontreraient moins de difficultés, et qu’ils y prendraient plus de goût, les faits et les personnages dont Thucydide, Xénophon, Tite-Live, Tacite, Virgile les entretiendraient, leur étant déjà connus.</p>
<p>L’enseignement d’une science, quelle qu’elle soit, pouvant être fait dans la langue de la nation, je conçois bien l’inconvénient, mais je suis encore à sentir l’avantage d’ajouter à la difficulté des choses celle d’un idiome étranger, dans lequel il est souvent difficile, quelquefois impossible, de s’expliquer sans employer des tours et des expressions barbares. Si le maître parle un latin pur et correct, il ne gâtera pas le goût des élèves, mais ils fatigueront à l’entendre ; s’il parle un latin barbare, comme il est d’usage et de nécessité dans une langue morte à laquelle il manque une infinité de termes correspondants à nos mœurs, à nos lois, à nos usages, à nos fonctions, à nos ouvrages, à nos inventions, à nos arts, à nos sciences, à nos idées ; il sera entendu, mais ce ne sera pas sans danger pour le goût.</p>
<p>Et puis je demanderai : à qui ces langues anciennes sontelles d’une utilité absolue ? J’oserais presque répondre : à personne, si ce n’est aux poètes, aux orateurs, aux érudits et aux autres classes des littérateurs de profession, c’est-à-dire aux états de la société les moins nécessaires.</p>
<p>Prétendra-t-on qu’on ne puisse être un grand jurisconsulte sans la moindre teinture de grec et avec une très-petite provision de latin, tandis que tous les nôtres en sont là ? J’en dis autant de nos théologiens et de nos médecins : ces derniers se piquent de bien savoir et de bien écrire le latin, mais ils ignorent le grec ; et la langue de Galien et d’Hippocrate n’est pas plus familière à nos <hi rend="i">iâtres</hi><note xml:id="PAG_00000476-note1"> Du mot grec <seg>aOpô</seg>, médecin. (<hi rend="sc">Br.</hi>)</note> que l’hébreu, idiome dans lequel les livres saints sont écrits, ne l’est à nos hiérophantes. Mais tant pis, dira-t-on.</p>
<p>Et pourquoi tant pis ? en possèdent-ils moins bien l’anatomie, la physiologie, l’histoire naturelle, la chimie et les autres connaissances essentielles à leur profession ? leurs anciens auteurs n’ont-ils pas été traduits et retraduits cent fois ? Mais quand je conviendrais de l’avantage de ces langues pour certains <pb xml:id="PAG_00000477" n="473"/>états, la question n’en resterait pas moins indécise, car il ne s’agit point ici de leur utilité, mais bien du temps où il convient de les apprendre : est-ce lorsqu’on est enfant et écolier, ou lorsque, soustrait à la férule, on se propose d’être maître ? Entre les connaissances, est-ce dans le rang des essentielles ou des surérogatoires qu’il faut les placer ? essentielles ou surérogatoires, en faut-il occuper l’âge de l’imbécillité, l’âge où leur difficulté est au-dessus de la portion de jugement que la nature nous accorde ? Quand on les posséderait de bonne heure, sans la multitude des connaissances antérieures au rang d’enseignement que nous leur avons assigné, en entendrait-on mieux les auteurs ? On étudierait donc à cinq ou six ans ce qu’on ne saurait bien apprendre, et ce qui ne. pourrait servir qu’à vingt-cinq ou trente, et peut-être plus tard, car à quel âge un médecin est-il en état de sentir la vérité ou la fausseté d’un aphorisme d’Hippocrats ? Mais ce que je dis du moment où la connaissance du grec et du latin est utile au médecin, et de l’âge où il convient de se livrer à cette étude, je puis le dire du littérateur même, avec cette différence que sans grec, et, à plus forte raison, sans latin, on n’est point un homme de lettres : il faut absolument à celui-ci une liaison intime avec Homère et Virgile, Démosthène et Cicéron, s’il veut exceller ; encore suis-je bien sûr que Voltaire, qui n’est pas un littérateur médiocre, sait bien peu de grec, et qu’il n’est pas le vingtième, le centième de nos latinistes.</p>

<p>Si je ne suis pas d’accord avec l’usage sur le temps de l’enseignement des langues anciennes, je ne le suis pas davantage avec les philosophes, tels que Dumarsais et d’autres qui ont porté l’esprit de la logique dans la grammaire, sur la manière de les étudier toutes.</p>
<p>Demandez à Dumarsais comment on apprend le grec et le latin ; il vous répondra, traduire les bons auteurs.</p>

<p>Cependant, quel est le travail de l’esprit en traduisant ? C’est, de chercher dans la langue qu’on possède, les expressions correspondantes à celles de la langue étrangère dont on traduit et qu’on étudie.</p>
<p>Et quel est le travail de l’esprit en composant ? C’est de chercher, dans la langue étrangère qu’on apprend, des expressions correspondantes à celles de la langue qu’on parle, et qu’on sait.</p>
<p>Or il est évident que, dans cette dernière opération, ce n’est pas la langue qu’on sait, que l’on apprend ; c’est donc celle qu’on ignore.</p>
<p>Il ne l’est donc pas moins que dans la première qui est exactement son inverse, on fait vraiment le contraire<note xml:id="PAG_00000478-note1"> « Ce qui est surtout évident, c’est que, faute d’un instant de réflexion, Diderot a pris ici la proposition sous un point de vue tout à fait faux. Sans doute le travail du thème est de chercher un mot latin pour rendre le mot français ; mais s’ensuit-il de ce travail que le mot qu’on trouvera sera nécessairement celui qui convient ? Un écolier aura à rendre cette expression, <hi rend="i">maison Cornélienne</hi>, qu’après avoir cherche dans son <hi rend="i">Dictionnaire</hi> le mot <hi rend="i">maison</hi>, entre les différentes traductions de ce mot, il s’arrête au mot <hi rend="i">domus</hi> ; son travail de recherche lui aura été fort peu utile : rien ne le choquera dans la phrase où il insérera ce mot, rien ne l’avertira du ridicule de son choix ; comment, avant de savoir le latin, s’apercevra-t-il de la bizarrerie d’une phrase latine de sa composition ? Qu’au contraire il ait à traduire le <hi rend="i">gens Corneliana</hi>, s’il est embarrassé entre les différentes acceptions du mot <hi rend="i">gens</hi>, il aura, pour se diriger et s’éclairer, le sens du reste de la phrase dont il cherchera à se donner l’explication en français, et sera conduit à choisir la seule traduction du mot <hi rend="i">gens</hi> qui puisse entrer dans une phrase française raisonnable. Il me semble qu’on pourrait retourner ainsi la proposition de Diderot : Faire un thème, c’est chercher dans la langue qu’on ignore les moyens de rendre les paroles de la langue qu’on sait ; faire une version, c’est employer la langue qu’on sait à s’expliquer celle qu’on ignore. Lequel des deux offre le plus de facilité et de probabilités d’instruction ? Du reste, le genre de thèmes que propose ensuite Diderot me paraît le seul qui puisse avoir quelque utilité. » (<hi rend="i">Note de M. Guizot.)</hi> — Nous citons cette note sans nous rendre compte de l’objection. M. Guizot, en coupant la plus grande partie de ce qui suit, paraît ne pas avoir vu que Diderot défendait la thèse même qu’il l’accuse de combattre, c’est-à-dire qu’on ne saurait bien connaître une langue étrangère, si l’on ne fait à la fois le thème et la version. Faute d’un instant de réflexions, M. Guizot a pris Dumarsais pour Diderot.</note>.</p>
<p rend="left"> Mais si ces deux sortes de versions concourent au progrès <pb xml:id="PAG_00000479" n="475"/>de l’étudiant ; si la seconde y coopère plus fortement et plus évidemment que la première, pourquoi les séparer ?</p>
<p>Quand on compose on feuilleté à la vérité le dictionnaire de sa propre langue, mais c’est pour y chercher l’expression correspondante dans la langue étrangère ; c’est cette expression qu’on lit, c’est cette expression qu’on écrit, c’est à la syntaxe de cette langue étrangère qu’on l’assujettit, ce sont ses règles qu’on observe, c’est à ses tours qu’on tâche de se conformer, opérations qui toutes tendent à fixer dans la mémoire et la grammaire et le dictionnaire.</p>
<p>Que nous apprend l’expérience journalière là-dessus ? Elle nous apprend que le latin que les élèves ont étudié dans les écoles par le thème et la version leur est très-familier, et que le grec qu’ils n’ont étudié que par la version leur est toujours difficile.</p>

<p>C’est ainsi qu’on apprend les mots, la syntaxe, et qu’on saisit l’esprit d’une langue qui s’établit dans la mémoire par la lecture, et par l’écriture ;</p>
<p>3° Composer et traduire sur toutes sortes de matières et d’après tous les auteurs, sans quoi la connaissance de la langue restera toujours imparfaite. Rien de plus commun que d’entendre, sans hésiter, Homère et Virgile, et que d’être arrêté à chaque phrase dans Thucydide ou Tacite. Rien de plus commun que de trouver tous les mots propres à la guerre, à l’histoire et à la morale, et d’ignorer le nom d’une fleur, d’une plante potagère ou d’un ustensile domestique ; on sait le mot latin d’un bouclier, on ne sait pas le mot latin d’un éteignoir, mot qui n’exista peutêtre pas ou qui ne nous est pas parvenu, la perte des auteurs ayant consommé avec le progrès de nos connaissances l’appauvrissement des langues anciennes.</p>

Pour les maîtres, le <hi rend="i">Grand Dictionnaire grec</hi> d’Estienne.</p>
<p>En latin, pour les élèves, un de nos <hi rend="i">Rudiments</hi>. Pour les maîtres, la <hi rend="i">Minerve</hi> de Sanctius<note xml:id="PAG_00000481-note5"> Francisco Sanchez, <hi rend="i">Minerva, seu de causis linguæ latinæ</hi>. Salamanque, 1587. Diderot renvoie sans doute à l’extrait de Chompré : <hi rend="i">Introduction à la langue latine par la voie de la traduction</hi>. Paris, 1757, in-12.</note>. Et puis la nuée de ceux qui ont écrit des dialectes de la langue grecque, de ses idiotismes, de ses prépositions, de ses temps, de la valeur du verbe moyen et des particules de l’oraison latine, de la prosodie, etc.</p>
<p>Il faudrait faire traduire tous ces ouvrages. Il serait important de se procurer les meilleures éditions des auteurs anciens et de les réimprimer dans l’empire ; une société de savants consacrés à ce travail serait bien moins dispendieuse et beaucoup plus nécessaire qu’une Académie, car c’est ainsi que peu à peu on ferait naître l’art de, l’imprimerie et le commerce de la librairie.</p>

<head rend="uc center">Avantage de l’étude des langues grecque et latine.</head>
<p>Les Grecs ont été les précepteurs des Romains : les Grecs et les Romains ont été les nôtres, je l’ai dit, et je le répète : on ne peut guère prétendre au titre de littérateur, sans la connaissance <pb xml:id="PAG_00000482" n="478"/>de leurs langues. La langue grecque ayant beaucoup influé sur le latin, et la grammaire en étant un peu plus difficile, on pense communément que c’est par cette étude qu’il faut commencer ; mais l’étudiant n’étant plus un enfant, ayant le jugement fait et la tête meublée d’une assez bonne provision de connaissances élémentaires en tout genre, il est temps qu’il médite et qu’il réfléchisse. J’estime donc que l’étude des deux langues doit marcher de front ; celui qui sait le grec, rarement ignore le latin ; et il n’est que trop commun de savoir le latin et d’ignorer le grec. Celui qui a appris le latin, ne l’oublie guère<note xml:id="PAG_00000482-note1"> Selon Diderot, parce qu’il l’a appris par le thème et la version. (<hi rend="i">Note de M. Guizot.)</hi>
</note>, et celui qui a su le grec qu’il n’a appris que par la version, l’a bientôt oublié s’il ne le cultive sans relâche. Ces deux langues renferment de si grands modèles en tous genres, qu’il est difficile d’atteindre à l’excellence du goût sans les connaître. Voyager à Rome pour les peintres, voyager à Rome et à Athènes pour les littérateurs ; celui qui a un peu de tact, discernera bientôt l’écrivain moderne qui s’est familiarisé avec les Anciens, de l’écrivain qui n’a point eu de commerce avec eux.
