recommendation for (non-XML) reference alternatives

I'm wondering what the recommendation might be for storing "non-XML" alternatives of a reference, e.g., bibtex.

This would simplify the re-use of references by readers. A visual rendering tool such as eLife Lens could expose such formats to the reader to easily import one or many references.
