Simtools requires a couple of items to be available to be fully functional:

simtools itself
access to model parameter database
installation of simulation software (CORSIKA/sim_telarray)

Useful would be a small tool to return status of your current local setup:

test installation of simtools (e.g., accessibility of simtools command line tools)
test connection to database
print basic configuration parameter from database (especially when configured with ‘LATEST’ flag)
test for availability of CORSIKA and sim_telarray. Return version numbers.
