It sounds like the volume isn't mounted for some reason, but the log isn't giving a clear error that would indicate why. Were you aware that Nix was already on the system, and/or intentionally trying to reinstall? At this point I'd recommend just following the uninstall instructions before reinstalling it: https://nixos.org/manual/nix/stable/installation/uninstall.html#macos |

Just uninstalled, restarted, and tried again and it failed at the same spot. Had to update to Sonoma 14.0 too. Here are the new logs: Output |

FYI, I talked with a co-worker who has dabbled with Nix about this issue. He said that he had a similar issue, and found out it was a company-related constraint that was causing the issue. He told me to try this installer instead. I will try that out. Regardless, I think my company would allow Nix, so any information about what is specifically causing the install error would be appreciated. |

I think the problem in your case is indicated by this line: It's a guess, but your organization might have a device/MDM profile that enforces read-only mounting. I don't recall encountering this specific case, but I think we've run into people with org profiles that block mounting altogether. I'm not sure why the detsys installer would differ here. Figured this out with my IT department. Our MDM was causing the issue here. Closing this and putting my resolution here for posterity: I had kandji installed on my laptop. There was a user install that noted setting external drives to "read only". IT needed to move my to a different blueprint that enabled read/write on external disks and volumes. I needed to run @abathur thank you for the help |

Trying to install Nix on my Mac, but running into issues with the root directory being read-only. What is interesting is that Nix mentions this issue in the logs, so it sounds like it should have been avoided.
